I have in mind that I want to get a nicer Type Morgan dollar (MS-64 to MS-65). I like my Morgans to have a clean cheek and field and to be nice and white. I'm thinking a PCGS of NGC would be nice even though you have to pay the premium. So what kind of date should I look at and does anyone have ideas on where to buy? I'm thinking $50-$150 range

Hi Napoleon, and welcome to the forum!
The S-mint Morgans from 1879 to 1882 are usually very well-struck and have great luster. They are very common so you should have no trouble finding an attractive specimen that meets your requirements.
If you are willing to stretch to $200+, you might consider an 1882, 1883, or 1884 coin from Carson City. These are also usually well-struck and there are lots of nice ones. The CC mintmark will always add premium value to these coins. IMO, you will never regret going for Carson City over San Francisco.

yes the CCs are nice. But I'm more thinking of a Type coin.
But now that you say something I might look into buying one for a bit more. Just because the resale value would go up more than a cheaper one.

in that price range a 1880-S would probably be the best struck and be the best looking coins for the buck

Hi Napoleon, and welcome aboard! I have to agree with Jaobler on this one as there is just something special about the CC mintmark. For about $200 you should be able to find a nice 1884-cc in pcgs or ngc ms64. If you don't care about mintmarks or dates, Bryan's right about the 1880-s having the biggest bang for the buck.

Thank you all I am going to save up for an up coming coin show and I will look for either a nicer CC or an 1880-S. I should be able to find one for a decent price.

I don't want to use the resources to collect a date set of Morgan's so I chose a top quality mint set (one from each mint). CC's won't get cheaper so I'd go there first.

I like the CC Morgan .......... just because of the extra added history to them...... The Comstock lode silver strike and the shortlived time of the Carson City Mint only up and running because of that particular silver strike and when it ran out.......the Mint followed. Something to that effect anyway...... Even low grade CC Morgans go for more than they should around here in Kansas. I have a small handfull of them in my collection. My father gave me one that Redbooked at $570.00 or so. I'll take a pic of it sometime and put it up........ It's criminal to talk about it when I've even forgotten the date !! sorry ! LOL HA HA

If you are shooting for a 64 or 65 Morgan as a type coin, may I suggest that you get one of the nicer S minted dates in certified proof-like(PL) or deep mirror proof-like(DMPL) condition? You will spend a bit more than a regular Morgan but the look of a nice PL or DMPL is stunning

The more I see Morgans the more I am beginning to like them. I think later this year I might be able to start on this collection
