I was wondering if I am alone or not. I started filling in books from "pocket change" only. I have only started to get into it the last year but I had some Lincoln Cents, Jefferson nickels, and really what got me started was the State Quarters. This past year I have started: 6 Lincoln Cents Whitman folders (ONE is complete and two nearly) 4 Jefferson/Buffalo Nickel Whitman folders (one nearly complete) 1 Westward Ho Nickel folder (nearly complete as I am looking for a couple more for obverse display) 2 Roosevelt dimes (this week I'll get another folder for 2005 and beyond) 5 Washington Quarters/Statehood Quarter Whitman and other folders (one nearly complete) 1 Presidential dollars foler (looking into getting Sacagewea foler this weekend) My thing is I've only done pocket change; I've not bought any coins yet! I was thinking to, but I know nothing of grading. Is anyone here NOT buying coins? Just doing like I am? I did however for the very first time, go to the bank and get a roll of the dollars because I've not seen any in circulation. I managed to get two of the Presidents, but am missing the last one for 2007. Most of the roll was Sacagewa unfortunately. I did that because of people here so thanks! anyway, that's all I collect. I was thinking of possibly doing Kennedy halves, but I only have like half dozen of them and they are rarely seen in cirulation. Why is that? Are people hoarding Halves and dollars?

I'm a "newbie" too.....err...well... sort of. First, I would just say do what is fun and interesting to "you". It doesn't need to be all about how much it's worth or how much you can turn around and sell it for in 3 months or a year and a half. Think long term and handing it down to others after you. I have yet to join the world of " ebay" (just browsed it a few dozen times) but it can be a way to aquire missing coins for you. I personally prefer "coin auctions" and "estate auctions". I haven't ever really got much through "pocket change" other than the State Quarters and wheat pennies. When a new Presidential dollar is released, you can get singles or rolls uncirculated from your local bank and I've been doing that every time. They went above and beyond for me at the bank with the State Quarters by the way ! I have a lot of uncirculated Deleware rolls and singles from many many states, but I started on that late, so the bank luckily had some put away in the vault they let me have ! The older coins, obviously, are the best value for your collecting buck..... but it's all soooo much fun !

Half Dollars like the Ike dollars and to a large degree the small dollars just really never circulated ,, they are available at the bank also though and its faily easy to put togeter a circulated set that way, minus of course all of them since 2002 they were not released into general circulation ,,but were kept in the mint and proofsets. I can tell you there is not one coin received in circulation that I do not look at ,, I either keep it or put it in coin tubes that sit on my desk,, my wife uses the quarters and dimes for Her lunch money I use the nickels and cents to turn in for rolls of cents from the bank to search. Thanks for responding. I think I'll use the bank option more now. I might ask about Kennedy half dollars and keep on with the dollars. Now, what I was thinking to buy is "missing" coins I can never get in circulation. For example, I am so new it's hard for me to tell about the 1982 set (all the small/large dates etc) and also one book has 1900-1909 Indian Head cents as slots to fill in as well as the nickel alloy cents (1957-1864 I believe). I'll never get these in circulation so... but they seem very expensive because of the shipping (most charging 3-5 bucks to ship a cent!). Plus, a lot on ebay are mint or unciruclated that I don't want to break up. What I'd like to do is trade with people at some point. I've got about 100 in rolled change and a ton of wheat cents as well as extra coins (foreigh and domestic) that I don't have in books. I have no ideas of value, but I might look into that. Someone suggested estate auctions. But I am so afraid to buy anything as I am not experienced to know if I've gotten a good deal or didn't over pay 10 times what it's worth etc. I don't mind paying some extra, but don't want to get taken either. So I just do the pocket change for now. I wish I was more seasoned but heck even today I had to look up the 2004-2005 Jefferson nickels to see if they minted Monticello backs cause I didn't know. I feel so green.

To Metalman:
I was wondering (since you're obviously knowledgable) if you know if the Sacagewea dollars from 2002-2007 were only minted in either uncirculated or mint sets? I ask because the numbers were very low and I've never seen any in circulation. All I've ever gotten is 2000&2001 (P&D).

The same thing applies to the Sacies,,they were not released into circulation since 2001. Just in the mint and proofsets and rolls from the mint.
I should have mentioned that the kennedies are also available in rolls directly from the mint ,,although they are a bit expensive .
When you know what it is you need post in the want to trade forum and see what others have that they are willing to trade .

Also, you need to buy the "Official RedBook". It's available at any bookstore. It's full of information and it lists the values of ALL US coins from the 1700's to the current Presidential dollars ! The 2008 price book is out right now ! Every quarter, dime, nickle, penny, 50 cent piece, etc. etc. is listed in there and very easy to "look up" coins. This book has been called the "coin collectors bible" The values for any and all are listed inside. So you won't be taken to the "cleaners" if you use that as a guideline. There a "Blue book" too that's a dealers price book, but it's hard to find people selling at "that" price. You see people carrying around "The Official RedBook" at these coin auctions and other places, so they know what the "ceiling" is on paying certain amounts for any coin. But on the other hand, like you said, sometimes you pay a little more because you just "want" a particular coin. And generally the value "will" go up over time. All prices went up for coins from 2007 to 2008 RedBook wise generally including wheat pennies and non-silver/gold coins...... so the "collecting value" is important...they'll gain value over time !

Dahoov, I'd recommend buying a ' RedBook' (A Guide Book of United States coins by R. S. Yeoman). As a price guide it's not all that great, but as a general reference for U.S. coins, it's a "must have." (Eaglefoot, you beat me to it!) I believe Sacagawea dollars were not made for 'circulation' after 2001. They were made for mint sets and sold in rolls to collectors.

Thanks for the help guys. I will say that this particular forum is one of the best ever. I've belonged to a number of boards over time and this is indeed just about the friendliest and most knowledgable (without being preachy or putting people down)group ever. for the Sacies as you call them (good because I never know how to spell it correctly), I wouldn't want to break up any mint sets I don't think to fill a book. So I'll consider whether or not to get a book for those now. I will most definately get the RedBook then. I think even if I am not worried about value, it has all the coins minted so that's cool by itself. That way I don't bother people here so much. If anyone needs help with autograph collecting, now that is where I am more knowledgable and don't be afraid to email on that. I hope I can "give back" one day on here in some small way.

Dahoov....... I have James Arness' autograph !! You know Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke ? There's a long story behind it, but it's a prized possession of mine for sure ! I have it in a frame on a bookshelf ! Signed right to me too ! And YES ! He "IS" still alive ! Dont ever worry about "bothering" people with what "you" might consider bothersome questions !! They're not at all ! And yes THIS forum is awesome and very friendly ! People here don't like to see collectors waste their money I've noticed and you may be politely "cuffed" for making bad decisions, but it's all a learning experience and everyone starts somewhere and many are willing to offer a hand up at any time here........ as I've heard here before "knowledge is key".......

we all have made our mistakes in collecting and that is why these boards are so valuable to the new and experienced collector alike, the new collector can ask questions they are wondering about and the experienced collector can share their experiences with the new collector to stop them from making the same mistakes they made and they also have someone to talk to about their hobby they have loved for so long (most experienced collectors love the new spark and enthusiasm the new collector brings to the table) and their family usually get tired of hearing them talk about coins

I don't buy cause I have no $$$$$ No, really, putting together sets from circ. is very enjoyable for me too. I am doing State Quarters this way and have done in the past, all the small coins under 50 cents this way. Always looked foward to the hunt. Now I just buy most of my coins as I collect early stuff now. yes indeed this is the Best forum there is, Bobby and Susan do a great job. No EGO's here. regards Tony Regards Tony

Okay, so I'll continue on with collecting from pocket change, but I am now placing bids (unsuccessfully I am sure) on some I can't get in circulation much or don't know about. Those nickel cents, the 1800-1809 Indian cents, and now I am looking into Sacagewea dollars and the Susan B Anthony ones (I have only 1979 ones so I need the 1980,1981 and 1999 P&D&S ones). I think the rest I'll still do pocket change only as it's rather more fun "hunting" and gives me something to do every day. I might have to buy VDB Lincoln cents though! I think those will be the hardest to find in circulation. does anyone have ALL their Lincoln cents folders filled in? I'm doing well, but some are definately difficult for me to find (especially S minted ones).

PS the James Arness graph is cool! I am into Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and such. I have a ton of graphs (thousands actually). I have 1300 DIFFERENT Star Wars sigs! I collect crew as well and other related graphs from the cartoons, TV series, books, video games, and all that stuff.
Now it's coins and recently interested in "oddity" "natural" stuff. Like Meteorites, fossils, dinosaur eggs and those types of things. Just and odd thing here or there.
I also collect Animation cels, posters, trading cards, boxes, and a few other smaller collections.
