Dahoov2, I an big time roll searcher an built maybe 20 sets this year from bank boxs of change from banks on all coins. 1. 13 1909 thru 2007 penny books from change. I cheated on the wheats and bought. Not complete needs 82 small dates, 68s pennys. Went thru maybe 1000 dollars worth of boxs. Only found two Indian cents 1890 and 1907 this year. 2. 4 1938 thru 2007 nickel sets. The 62 thru 2007 sections were completed with about 500 dollars worth nickels. I cant find wartime silvers, 1950d, 42d, 58, 56, 39d, 38s, 38d, coins from change. 3. 1965 thru 2007 quarter book finished after going thru 500 to 1000 thousand worth quaters. No silver coins ever found. 4. Dime book was done this year. 65 thru 2007. No silver found after going thru serval boxs of dimes. 5. On half sets. I am building 4 1964 thru 2007 sets , one 48 thru 63 franklin book . I bought over 1600 face worth halfs in last few years. I still need lots to fininsh those 5 sets. 48 thru 63 needs 25 coins to finish. I went thru 1400 worth bank rolls this year to get this far. My last two boxs I found maybe 15 silver coins totol aslong with some proof coins. I think I need to buy maybe 5000 dollars worth to search to finish them. 6. On susan dollars I never found proofs or 1981 coins in there. I collected over 200 bucks worth in last 10 years. 7. Ike dollars I never seen them at banks anywhere intill last weak I found 39 ikes in rolls. I have not seen in circulation in many years. 8. I been buying bu rolls of new 2007 dollars from banks to put away. On sacs I found they all 2000 and 2001 coins. I will tell this tell bank box searching is tough and you need to spend time and money buying fresh boxs to search. I search them and sell them to an secord bank for fresh boxs all the time since I try to do 5 to 10 boxs each weak. The only way to build sets is to buy thousands of boxs of coins to search. Its takes an lot time to build sets. I enjoy it all the time. Chevrolet454ss

WOW! You really have dedicatated yourself to it, but the way I figure it satisfies a collecting need, a need for being a completist and hey, there is a LOT of worst ways to spend your time right? Now for a couple questions. Since I got my first roll the other day ( Presidential dollars that turned out to be mostly Sacies), I kept 6 coins out of it and the rest were not worth it for me. I ended up throwing in some other sacies and some susan B Anthony's to make up for the roll and was going to turn it back into the bank. What do you do with all the excess? Are you rerolling them and turning them back in? Does the bank get mad? I know they hate change because I worked at a bank before and the teller hated Christmas espcially with all the Salvation Army stuff... and once, we had a man come in and pay his delinquent car payment with change! I can't afford to buy rolls like that and keep them most likely. I also don't want too many excesses of coins. If my book is filled, I'll roll the rest unless they're very hard to get (I did keep the Presidential dollars that were in the best condition). I would like to start more roll searching, but am afraid to get the banks mad! So what is the protocol?

PS thanks for the info. Looks like the Susan B Anthony's and the Sacies are a waste of time and might be easier on the 1982 cents to just buy fillers. Oh and your collection is very impressive! In a way, it's a nice way to save. Though you aren't getting interest, the values probably at least make up for that and if you ever had to sell, you'd probably would be able to get through longer... that's the great thing too about coins; they don't really depreciatae like Stocks! I took a 600 hit on dreamworks yesterday.

Yeah all of my family & friends are "sick & tired of hearing me talk about coins" and asking them if they have any Wheat cents, or Merc dimes, or Buffalo nikles. (My Grandma gave me three Morgans for my birthday one year !) My dad is the only one who really shares the hobby with me and he's not into it often anymore. Dohoov........ I have an Uncle who has a "meteorite" except he thinks it may have come off of a comet that impacted Mars or something...... don't know about that ! I collect Indian arrowheads and other artifacts like that.... I go to Mountain Man Rendezvous, Pow Wow's, I really like "The Old West" stuff.

Dahoov2, I had one bank upset over me selling boxs each weak. I have 3 banks accounts and rotate them around to each bank. I sometimes reroll them but an lot time I dump them at one of my banks coin machice that counts them and gives me credit for them. I buy from 5 banks and I always checking them for silver coins, ikes, dollar coins, two dollar bills, bu rolls of new coins. I do it every wedesday night before I to church. I try hit 4 or 5 banks in maybe 2 hours before church. After church I found an bank that open 24 hours I buy coins and sell with sometimes. I may open an 4th bank account with new bank that has new counting machice to dump coins. On main street in town there are 5 banks within 2 miles of each other. I can hit each bank in less than hour on all 5 banks. I try clean out each bank on whatever I can get. My collection is geting biger each week but I missing lots pre 64 silver coins I dont ever find. All my extra sets , bu rolls or cool stuff I find will be sold later on ebay to raise money to buy silver coins or stuff I cant find in rolls. I may have maybe 30 sets of coins and maybe 500 to 1000 face worth bu rolls I colleted for last year I been doing this. On large amounts of coins I take them home and play with them over next weak intill wedsaday and I start all over again with fresh boxs. I spend anywhere from 25 bucks to 100 bucks per week on coins. I always keep the good stuff and recyle the money over and over again intill I am broke again. 125 dollars worth coins lasted me over 2 monlths since I just keep using it over and over again. Very interesting! You are into it way more heavily than I am. I am so green anyway. I just started learning this past month or so when I posted to this group. My husband went to a bank today and just asked for my missing Presidential dollar and they reached in the till and first one she pulled out was one. They had no problem with it. I might ask about the Eisenhower dollars now and Kennedy halves. I think it'd be cool to have those. I don't know really where to begin and end. So I am setting limits to myself. If the coins were minted from my lifetime, I'll do them in ciruclated form only, and no gold or buying silver. I can't afford it. I thought about it though. I might buy a "few" cents or whatever to fill in, but don't plan to make that a primary goal. I have never heard of a bank open 24 hours! Cool. On those machines that count coins? Is there a fee? do they every question you as to why you are doing that or do they expect people are "collectors"? Amazing the dedication you have Chevrolet454ss.... and I bet an amazing collection. Today I became eligible to post photos, but I have nothing really; just normal stuff "every day". No double strikes or anything. I am not sure I'd recognize stuff unless it was REALLY obvious. what are the odds of me finding anything unique and worthwhile? Any suggestions on what to look for? to Eaglefoot, Cool on the old west stuff. My collection is not really a "collection" I have historical stuff like: Dino egg, Clay pipe from 1600's, fossil I found, Indian Arrowhead from 1500's, a civil war bullet, Greek Bronze Bracelet from time of Alexander the Great, coin from sunken ship (Admiral Gardner), two roman coins, one roman lionhead decoration from a roman soldiers leater skirt, an Egyptian Reed Pen and soapstone amulet and mummy bead necklace from Egypt, a carved stone from Petra (might be fake though; was a gift), three pieces of rock from famous places (shhh) and some odd stones/shells from various places (Dead Sea or beaches around here etc). I want now the meteorite and a REAL crystal ball. Why? I don't know. I like collecting natural things and just collecting odd interesting items as well as the coins and autographs and animation cels.

Well the're from here in VA. Jamestown, Monticello, and a dignitary residence in Washington DC (I have a cobblestone-NOT removed from any permanant fixture; let's just say that). I know; it's almost criminal to take say a piece of the parthenon or a pyramid so I'd probably not try those, but these were found "just near" excavation rope... just outside... shhhhhh I feel bad enough, but for me, it's history!

Dahoov2, That bank I deal with thats open 24 hours is called Woodforest and its inside an Walmart store thats open 24 hours per day in conroe texas. An lot companies use it and Walmart uses it to buy coins. They buy over 2000 worth pennies from federal government each week to sell to Walmart or anybody esle who buy them. They sell lots coins and its no problem. Tonight I short on cash and only bought one box of 25 dollar pennies from them. I even bought like 4 bucks worth half dollars from them. After I search them I may dump at one my banks or reroll and use them to buy stuff like gas or food or whatever. You can do the same thing use the what you need for sets and use the rest for stuff you need to buy. On ikes or halfs, two dollar bills or whatever you just ask bank for them. They will sell them to you. I even ask for bu rolls of coins sometimes if they have them. You can afford to buy silver coins like I do to complete sets. My trick is find an good find from bank I sell it on ebay . You can also sell your completed sets on ebay like an 1941 Thur 2007 penny folder for like 40 dollars and use the money to buy stuff you cant find in banks to finish sets. That's I what I do. The wheat's I pay around 3 to 4 bucks per roll on ebay since I cant find an lot them in bank boxes. If I was you I would save all 59 thu 81 copper pennies to sold as copper bullion on ebay just like silver coins are . I so far have saved up 100 face or 65 pounds of 59 Thur 81 copper pennies. On ebay they will buy for it around 200 bucks for copper bullion. Most 25 dollar bank boxes have maybe 5 or 6 bucks worth of them in there you for you to save in-till you get an 25 or 50 dollar box full of them. I am trying sell my copper cents to buy 4 rolls of old pre 64 to 46 silver dimes at cost about 50 bucks for 5 bucks face on them. You can even get silver at face value from buying boxes of half dollars from banks sometimes. They cost 500 bucks per box and the bank will special order them. I would buy when you get your paycheck from working. Use the stuff you dont want or need to pay your bills since its lot money. Chevrolet454ss

I have the same love for history as you do...... BUT I LIVE IN KANSAS ! Monticello would freak me out ! I would die of a heart attack just on the approach or Mount Vernon, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian, all the "colonial era towns with re-enactors, etc. etc. etc. There's not a great deal here historically speaking..... Well I mean there is, but not on a scale such as the east coast where you are. That's why I like coins too, I think in part because of the history involved. Heh ! Heck ! That's a neat idea though gathering rocks from "nearby" famous locales..... I think I might try that !

To Chervolet454ss Wow. That's a lot of info. I didn't think of Wal-mart! I'll check out mine closest as they just put in a new bank there. I just started hearing the theory about lincoln cents. Is this becaus they said that they've been trying to stop minting the cents? Last night, I bought the dime book I needed (lol it's only 2005 on) and the Sacagawea book and the Eisenhower dollar/Susan B. Anthony combo folder. I don't have ANY Ikes but my hubby said the teller offered him a roll of those. I am having him go back. I just realized they ONLY minted those in the 70's and that there's not many to collect. Looks like two of them have low mintage but otherwise shouldn't be too hard to get. I have about 20 dollars in wrapped lincolns now that I don't need. You suggest rerolling them into 59-81? I don't get a paycheck (not currently working for a few years now but last job was in a bank and I wasn't collecting them. Kind of like me living in Southern California near LA and wasn't autograph collecting then! Karma is against me! But hubby makes a good living. If I didn't have this 125k in son's student loans on my back, I'd be happy as a clam. To Eaglefoot, I've been to DC many, many times. All those places and Mount Vernon and all the Smithsonian museums (some two or three times). We've also been to a couple re-enactments and some old historical homes here (Lee Hall Mansion and others). The area even on base is historical. I found a run down tiny cemetery part of bethel church where soldiers had a battle (literally a street away); this is why we want a metal detector ... now with the coin collection starting, I want the satisfaction of even finding ONE thing historical. A buckle or bullet... anything! Can we post websites here? My personal one shows all the places we visitied dahoovsplace.com If we weren't supposed to do that I apologize.

Dahoov, I bought a $500.00 metal detector towards the end of summer. The only thing I can seem to find is hunters shell casings ! I also go to old pioneer homes and territorial/frontier structures. A lot of times there is nothing much left of the house, but I figure why not check it out. I know the chances of finding a Morgan silver dollar dropped by a pioneer in the 1800's at his own house (as precious as money was back then) is going to be pretty hard to find, but you never know and it "IS" fun trying..... well frustrating really when you never find anything........but I havent had a full summer of doing this yet, so wish me luck this coming summer ! I've been to a lot of Plains Indian sites and found a "skull cracker" once. I also found a stone axe. And I have a spear point that is ten inches long found in North Dakota in the 1930's by a friend of my dad's. I have a stone bowl that they would mash corn up in and stuff. Lots of arrowheads. Big fan of Lewis & Clark too. I'm actually supposed to be related to one of them my Grandma says. I'll check out yer site when I get the chance (I'm supposed to be working now !)

VERY cool artifacts (I used to live in North Dakota; should've done some Indian hunting then). In Arizona, the lands were littered with arrowheads and whatnot. Maybe you need to take a trip west! I don't know if I'd recognize an axe or stone tool on my own from just a rock! But I save unique things. It's fun.
Check out my site if you have time because if you love history, I've included nice links. Especially look in Virginia because I've got photos of Yorktown Battlefields, Cornwallis' cave, tons of stuff of possible interest with links to informative or very interesting places. For me, teh most facsinating are the least known, like St. John's church, Battle of Big Bethel and the Big Bethel church up the street from me. Hardly known, but great stories!
So I guess if you like Lewis and Clark, you like the Westward Ho nickels?

Yeah..... I came raging back into coin collecting about a year and a half or two ago..... so I missed the Lewis and Clark nickles first hand. But I do have a book with all of the coins in there except three "P" mints, and they're circulated so...... We don't get much "P" mint anything here in Kansas without a lot of effort looking for them...... and I do look at everything. I take trips "out West" all the time. Every year I go to Colorado, Wyoming, or South Dakota....Just for fun...(camping, fishing, hiking, sightseeing, etc) I've been to Yellowstone several times too. (love that place!) I've only been to the Southwest once and that was to Albaquerque, New Mexico. My dad wanted to trade or look at Navajo jewelry down there. (he has an extensive collection from the 1800's of that and a rug from about 1900). I'm not a big desert person, I like "greenery with my scenery"......... so I like the Rockies !
