Strikethrough or over polishing maybe but that verdigris is atrocious

I would say definitely over polishing of the die. Look at Abe's jacket - part of it is also missing.

It's the rare "Here comes the airplane" error.

I'd agree that either polishing or a strike-through is the most likely culprit here.

Over Polished Die

The example below shows a 1974-D cent that has details missing because of an over worked die that had been polished to remove clash marks. This can easily be confused with a filled die error.
