So I was watching the HSN's The Coin Vault today that I recorded from last night. On the show they were calling ANACS as "annex". I always though that you say it as A.N.A.C.S. Anyone know that proper way?

A.N.A.C.S. is the proper way to pronounce it. It used to stand for American Numismatic Association Certification Service if I am correct

Right, I've always heard it and said it as A.N.A.C.S. I've never heard it as annex. I'm guessing it's easier to say that on the show since it's quicker than A.N.A.C.S, but if they officially called themselves as A.N.A.C.S. then it seems like they're selling out by having them call themselves annex. Maybe now a self slabber will will there service annex and try to business from uneducated HSN viewers?

In my isolation and ignorance, I've always said "A-nacks". No-one I've said it to knew any different. If they didn't want people goin' round pronouncing it like a word, they should have come up with a less pronounceable acronym.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I've heard both "A-nacks" (long "a" on the first one, short "a" on the second), and "annax" (short "a" on both). To pronounce each letter separately ("A.N.A.C.S") should be unacceptable. That was OK while it was still a part of the ANA, because then the actual name was "American Numismatic Association Certification Service", so the abbreviation was just an acronym. But after the service was sold off the acronym actually became the name of the company. To pronounce it as though it were still the abbreviation would be to suggest that it is still a part of the ANA, which it is not.

Conder, if we ever meet you'll be able to know who I am then. I guess I was wrong, but ANACS is A.N.A.C.S.
