I'm currently working on a morgan date set and I would like to purchase a certified DMPL and PL. Just to compare to other coins and notice when there is a DMPL or PL I could cherry. Is it just me or are the DMPL/DPL morgans on ebay expensive compared to the NGC/PCGS price guide (Which I feel is on the high side for most coins) Is the premium because of a limited number, a large demand or what? I plan on trying to get one at the Summer FUN show this weekend, but will I see the same premiums there? Here's an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1881-O-PCGS...em1ea111767c PCGS values this coin at $100 however the seller has it at almost triple that... Edited by 1916 D Merc 07/06/2015 12:04 pm

Because there are less of them, not to mention they have better eye appeal than normal morgans. Morgans get PL, DPL, and DMPL because they were struck on fresh, new dies. After the dies became a little more worn, the coins were normal.

I get that the fresh dies made the coins DMPl,PL etc. Is the eye appeal really worth the premium? (I personally haven't examined a DMPL Morgan very closely.) And I guess the answer is that I will see premiums like this on any certified DMPL Morgan dollar.

I generally don't even look at buy it nows on ebay. To me an unsold buy it now listing is saying that nobody in the world has decided to pay that price. Why would I want to be that sucker. I can understand if I were looking for a particular coin in a particular grade, but generally I am not. I am a proud bottom feeder like most ebay buyers. Look for DMPLs at auction with a low / below market starting bid and watch those ebay items, you will find them under price guide for sure with patience. Whether that coin on ebay has the same eye appeal as the slab reads is the big question.

The seller also states MAKE AN OFFER. probably because he knows he has a high bin price.

1881-O is a pretty common year for PL/DMPL so values are depressed. The reason this coin hasn't sold is because it's almost $100 over market value and has plenty of competition. But when you hold a true DMPL Morgan in hand, you'll know why they carry such a premium. There's nothing else in numismatics like a huge mirror-finished Morgan.

This seller has the only 1881-O MS 62 DMPL listed on ebay, so he may be trying to take advantage of the only listing in the pricing. Do not try to buy a raw PL or DMPL from photo on ebay as you will most often not get what is advertised as PL or DMPL. If the PL or DMPL is quality and not many on the market, the price will often be close to the NGC and PCGS price guide. You may want to look at the Heritage for PL and DMPL coins, but if the coin is quality and hard to find the auction price can sometime be higher than ebay. I purchased recently a 1886 MS 65 PL quality (close to DMPL) NGC coin for $25 above the list NGC price. Although the coin is common there are not a lot in PL and DMPL. For example, NGC has graded 21,790 in 1886 MS 65, but they have only graded 110 in MS 65 PL and 65 in MS 65 DMPL. Good luck on finding your DMPL and don't get hooked as it can get very expensive.

Low-grade DMPLs are just junk for the price, a very poor way to invest your money.

That coin actually looks pretty bad, IMO, PCGS also has it valued at only $100. I wouldn't pay even that much for it.

Below is a common date 1884 PL MS 65 that PCGS has listed for $750. The coin at Heritage has a current bid of $998.75. I was hoping to get the coin for under $700, but they ran me off with aggressive bidding. PCGS has only graded 26 1884's in MS 65 PL, so the price is being driven by demand and coin quality.

Set your ebay search to what you want, such as DMPL only in the Morgan category, then search lowest to highest price. Then search Auctions only, then save to receive daily email for that search. You probably won't see too many offerings that hit all these specifications, but if you are patient, it gives you the best shot at a nice coin for a reasonable price. Set your bid maximum and stick to it. It might take awhile to win, but when you do you'll be happy.

I've been searching ebay this way for a couple of days now. If I can't find a DMPL in my price range at Summer FUN, I'll probably try to buy one of the ones on my watch list. (Both are CCs, and priced well below Numismedia FMV)

Or you could go for a DMPL CC.... I chose to find one with some nice toning as well to suit my wants , took a little bit but eventually she showed her face, lol. If you look long enough you'll find what your looking for... I think I paid a hair over $300 at a show last year which is pretty far below numismedia listed value. The DMPL's are just stunning in hand.... You'll know why they have the premium once your holding one, lol. 1883 CC MS63 DMPL (sorry for the bad pics.... They're hard to photo straight on due to reflection) I think it's a lock at 64.... If I didn't like these slabs so much shed definitely be going in for a regrade!

Quote: Is the eye appeal really worth the premium? Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. I love proof coins, so a DMPL Morgan is definitely worth a significant premium to me. For the sake of comparison, here's a normal Morgan compared to a DMPL Morgan from my collection:

That was weird... They should be fixed now. I'm stumped.... That's the first photo I've put on a post in a while and they're from my "previously uploaded" pics.... They were right when I previewed my post, lol..... Weird. O well, hopefully they're right now. I'll try to get an obverse pic of the whole slab tonight. It's a small white old ANACS slab... Bar none my favorites to buy. Another thing to do is look for Morgan's that somehow didn't get the PL/DMPL designation... I've got a couple slabbed that I just don't know how they didn't get the designation... For regular prices. Kinda bad pics, don't really show the PL aspect too well, I had to take the photos at an angle, but it's definitely quite mirrored, all I can think is the black smudge (grease?) through "United" on the reverse held it back? This ones a PCGS 64. And by all "measuring guides" etc for PL/DMPL it should have at least gotten the PL IMHO. In fact, another guy was checking it out at the LCS when I bought it (on the counter with my "pile to buy", lol) and he, I and the two shop workers all thought it was absolutely PL... But hey, my gain! Now if I could just get rid of that black smudge! (On a side note, I have a dragon privy reverse proof maple leaf ((slabbed)) with almost the same smudge in the same spot?)
