The holed R is a dead giveaway. Nice Henning you have there--bought or found?

Congrats, Finn235, it is a Henning nickel - ie, a counterfeit produced (hilariously) when the faker happened to pick a warnick year for his cast forgeries, not knowing anything about the large reverse mintmark. It's a fascinating story = take a minute and Google it, worth the time.

Actually, I found it in the mid-60s in Philadelphia, where (as I dimly recall) the hoax originated.

Very cool. I've kept my eyes open for one of these, but never found one. Strange how a known counterfeit can illicit such desire!

He actually made counterfeits for, I think, 4 or 5 different years, but this one of course is easy to spot, unlike the others. On the run and in a panic, he dumped an estimated 3-400,000 of them into rivers, including the Schuylkill. Only a small fraction were recovered.

Coinfrog, this is a great topic. There are a number of new collectors that will learn.

Nice coin .. A good addition to any Jefferson collection.

I only have one ... but there are a couple members that
have a few. And one member that has more than I could guess.

Well, I must be learning something, because I was going to say I'm pretty sure that's a Henning!

The big question is, are all '44s without a mintmark a Henning nickel, or are there any known Greaser "pseudo-Hennings?" That would be a conversation starter coin to have!
