Last week I decided to write a short article about Parthian coins, something I've been wanting to do for a while. It is uploaded to Numiswiki at:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...hian%20Coins

Although the formatting got a bit screwy in the upload (the various lists I provide in the text lost their bullets), Forvum's Joe Sermarini tells me that his webmaster will be attempting to fix the problem. In any event, in the meantime the content is there for perusing.

I think it does a decent job of covering the basics of Parthian coinage. Please direct anyone who may be interested in this coinage to the article.

Thanks, all.

I had the sad need to sell my Parthian collection a couple of decades ago and I can honestly say that I still miss that collection.

I bought most of my pieces from Frank Robinson of NY, whom I'm sure you know, and I do miss adding to that set.

Although I've committed myself to my very last collecting venture, U.S. coins, I commend you for an absolutely wonderful introduction and beginning guidance for anyone who might peruse this course.

You really did a great service for anyone who considers Parthian coinage.

Excellent article, I just starting to learn about this coin type, sadly I only have one in my collection at present but do plan on getting more. This article will be something I'll refer to again and again. I've also posted the link in the stick thread on Books, Downloads, and Website as a permanent reference.

nice article BL! I'm interested in parthian coins, but I have only one ar drachm ...and one ae of elymiasis.

i didn't know they didn't produce any gold coins. I don't ever remember seeing a gold parthian...but hadn't really thought about it before.

why no gold coin though?

There doesn't seem to be a clear answer for this, Chris. They did use gold for jewelry, but not for coinage, apparently.

As Shore states, "Although gold was available to the Parthians, there does not appear to have been any Parthian gold coinage...The Seleukid coinage, the model for the early Parthian coins, included gold coins...but these were very rare and probably not used in normal trade. Thus, there was no immediate necessity or prototype for a gold coinage."

Sellwood stated, "Gold coins may have been struck, but rather as ceremonial medallions than for currency. However, I have not, myself, seen a genuine specimen."

Well, you did see a quite-probably fake one...in a 4/9 post by Titanium Spork...that was the thread where you and I mentioned we were both watching the Midwesten skies as tornadoes were passing through...
