I think I have decided to try to complete the $2.5 Indian quarter eagle set. There are only 15 in the series and I already have 4 of these. I will probably never have the 1911D but other than that they should all be pretty reasonable. I am shooting for AU50 and higher in grade and I want them to be certified by NGC or PCGS.
Has anybody else completed this set?
Are there any dates that are tougher than others? (minus the 11D)

It is a great set to complete and I think you can get the 1911D if you are patient and persistent. It is about the only gold set I know of that an average person could complete.

Congrats .. on deciding on doing this set. I have had this set on the back burner for a year or two. My progress is slow, I have only been picking them up if they come into local. The 1911 D, is the one I worry about getting also. Hope it is ok to post my progress .. thought you might like to see the Capital coin holder ...

Sure it is okay...I wish others would also post a few pictures of theirs as well.
It will be a pretty slow go for me as well. My goal would be to pick up 5 a year and then sell a kidney for the 11D!
I have very little gold in my collection so this will be a way to add a few ounces.

The 1911-d should not be a problem to obtain cheaply. The 1911-d, weak d, can be had in xf for about $600 or less if you don't mind one cleaned.

If like to own the 1911 D as an investment coin but I always have the issue of what If I wanted to sell it how would I unload it?
But I can freely offer the advice of if your going to buy one the best time to get it is right after Christmas when there's virtually no numismatic money flowing through the market place.

I have all but the 1911-D. None of them are certified, and I've been wondering if I should bite the bullet and send them to one of the top TPG's. I would appreciate any advice from those more in the know on gold pieces. Thanks.

Hey grr691 - I think it depends on how nice they are. No real sense in sending common circs to TPG.

I don't see the 1911D as being that great a problem. There are coins like 1916 LSQ that in just good condition are the same value as 1911 Indian. If you just stay on course and complete the collection except for the 1911D you can save up and get it. I am sure you can do it. I might just collect this incredible coin myself and I will get the 1911D if it is available.

Having put together several sets of these, the 1911-d value has gone done quite a bit in the last few years, so might be a good time to pick one up -- be sure you do NOT buy a "weak D". Also the 1914 is very under-rated, and under-priced in my opinion, so if you see a nice example try to buy it.

Those are fabulous coins. Gold prices are down and if you compare this set to the half eagle Indian Head the quarter eagle is much cheaper to collect. How much did the AU examples of the indian head cost you? The 1927 is jumping off the page.
