These coins where in a collection that my father in law has, that where given to him by an old friend of the family that passed away several years ago. Many of the coins in the collection of vaious types have a detailed description of them and some are worth quite a bit. These however where in a bag by themselves and I have no clue as to what type they are or where they are from. If anyone has any clues or suggestions or knows anything it would be greatly appreciated. Also if you know haw I can tell if these are real or not that would be great.

I am no expert on dates or regions, but those are definately early Greek coinage, most likely minted before 100 B.C.

You may want to post these in the Ancient Greek/Roman Forum. Sap can probably tell you everything you ever wanted to know about these coins.

Also welcome to the forum.

I believe some if not all of them are replicas. Some are counterstamped with the word "copy" and others have something else written on them.

I suspect you've found the old collector's "black bag", where he put all his fakes and replicas. I've got a bag like that.

They're all of famous designs (like the Syracuse Dekadrachm, Athenian "owl" and Alexander the Great) and would have taken pride of place in the collection if they were real. All but the owl have been stamped, presumably by the manufacturers of the replicas, and the owl looks a bit grainy - probably a tourist copy.

I agree the coins are all counterfeits. Modern replicas. Sap's analysis of the situation hits the nail squarely on the head.

You can read Alva Studios on some of the pictures. They were a museum replica outfit in New York that made copies of artifacts of all sorts - including coins.
