tfred Pillar of the Community Canada 627 Posts	Posted 07/08/2015 10:25 am I picked up a bunch of Trade dollars in a collection and I was wondering if there is any sort of online information about Canadian Trade dollars. I know generally they don't have much value. But I also know that some have a very small mintage and can be rare, especially silver examples. I have about ten that won't stick to a magnet and they have that nice ting sound to them. Does anyone have any info on the following. 1975 joseph Howe Festival /Halifax N.S 1978 British Columbia Sea Festival Dollar 1978 "same as above" but the reverse has Captian Cook Bicentennial 1980 McPuffin Dollar/ Fortress Louisbourg 1979 Queens County N.S./Our Privateer Heritage (with ship) 1980 Queens County N.S./ Our Farming Hertage (with farming plow) 1976 City of St Catharines 1980 Charlottetown Dollar/ Samual Holland 1981 Rodeo East Dollar (2 of them) no date Olympic Trust of Canada / Luge (with picture of luge) Edited by tfred 07/08/2015 12:08 pm Report this Post to the Staff

There are catalogues by Serge Pelletier on Trade dollars but it's outdated. The most up-to-date I could find was printed in 1984. Harmonica might be able to help you better than I can. Most dollars after the mid 1970s went from pure nickel to nickel-silver (argentite alloy) and are non magnetic. I've looked at the Coinsandcanada website as well as ebay and have found most of what I have. I haven't found anything exciting yet. Since you are from Moncton I am assuming you probably got some St. Andrew by the Sea tokens in the lot too. Those, along with McMuffin Dollars, command a higher premium then most. Here is a great online reference talking about them. http://www.standrewstradetokens.com/ Now for the ones you listed. If they where pure silver you could probably tell, they have that proof like look to them. Chances are your tokens are argentan 1980 McPuffin Dollar/ Fortress Louisbourg did not come in pure silver according to Pelletier (but his word isn't the gospel) so I would assume we have argentan. The Samual Hollen/Town hall dollar from Charletown is argentan. 73,000 Joseph Howe Halifax tokens where made and they came in a .99 silver version. If it weighs 17g it is silver. It looks like the Queen County ones could be arentan too, they made 100,000 tokens that year. Several come in bronze, bronze plated and what have you If you are coming down to the coin show in Harltand on New Brunswick Day bring them down as you would probably have a buyer in me.
