Happy 148th Birthday Canada and to fellow Canadians! (Using this opportunity to try out photo optimizer....) And 2015, the year of the 50th Anniversary of our flag. Remember Ookpik? It claims the flag was proclaimed in 1964, making that 51 years. Oh well.

Quote: Remember Ookpik? It claims the flag was proclaimed in 1964, making that 51 years. Oh well. I remember some of the flag designs during the debate. My dad liked the 3 leaves with blue borders, he had an antennae flag on the car of it. My aunt was vehemently opposed to any new flag, for years after she flew a Red Ensign at her house out of protest lol. Happy Dominion Canada Day everyone.

Wildflower I love the ookpik coin! At the school I work at our old mascot used to be the ookpik... now we're called the "giants".... I like ookpik much more!
Today since I live in Winnipeg I took my family to the mint. We had a GREAT time! They had free tours of the mint along with the ability to press your own token. (My clan managed to pick up four.. mine was a clipped planchette :D)
They also had magicians and clowns making balloons and doing card tricks. They had the coin exchange where you could get the new quarter commemorating 50 years of our flag. Danny whole hog pulled pork food cart outside... it was a really good time!
Hope your day has gone as well as mine!

Went for a drive along the seashore. Slept all afternoon, only getting up to eat. Hope you have a good day.

I also recall my family elders, dad and his red-headed sisters from BC having great debates over the most appropriate new Canadian flag. And if I remember correctly, the maple leaf design that was selected was nobody's favourite particularly because it was rare to see one in western Canada. It was sort of a big letdown as nobody "won" . Yes, and for some reason Ookpik got turfed, when at one time it was everywhere. I wonder why. Here's Lester, that new flag again in 1964, Dec 15th this time, waving Happy Canada Day:

Happy Canada Day everyone! Hope you're enjoying it.
Thanks for sharing the Ookpik medallion WildflowerAB I really liked Ookpik, but it was made of sealskin and doomed to extinction.

You're welcome and my pleasure to share Ookpik, torgemco and DBM. It's not often this medallion has seen the light of day. Quote: I really liked Ookpik, but it was made of sealskin and doomed to extinction.
I remember it as a fuzzy, furry souvenir in places like Banff but you're right.. I notice it was traditionally made from sealskin, yes that would do it. Given the Inuit probably didn't have imported broadcloth from China, I think they could be forgiven but instead the Ookpik was tossed to the sale bin and instead tourist shops got stuffed with little brown bears wearing RCMP outfits holding a Cdn flag in their paw.....which resulted in folks thinking bears were cute little animals and signs everywhere "DO NOT Feed the Bears!"
