I found this 1992 D cent which appears to have doubling of some form on its reverse. The notching on the A and R of AMERICA makes me wonder if this is a doubled die. What do others think about this coin?

That is really weird. I do not think it is a doubled die, but something caused it. I just can't out my finger on it...

I would love to have larger images of the Die Deterioration on that coin. Most often we see Die Deterioration on just the obverse. (possible the rotated die locations maybe the reason, not too many have noticed this on the reverses)

Coop, I have emailed you an array of images from this coin. I hope they reach you with ease, and serve the purpose you had in mind. I know you will use them well. Cheers.

I agree with the logic that suggests this is Die Deterioration damage. I was concerned that the doubling had not emerged in a consistent direction, or rotation class, but instead: all over the place. I do have a follow on question however, as I am curious: are the ripples spread across the coin's surface associated with Die Deterioration as well, or is that explained by a different anomaly? I have heard of "lathe marks" for example, not mentioning the myriad of other possibilities I've yet to learn. Thank you.

The plating not smooth. What caused that? I don't know. Just something that is not a plus for the coin. Lathe lines are on the dies that were not polished out. These can be found on different years. Copper/zinc coins can be affected. The die was not polished to remove them before the hubbing took place. Here is an example: They can be strong or light. Just depending on how hard they tried to remove them.

Observe how some of the doubling is on the left side of the devices, while in other areas it's on the right?
