As I prepare to embark upon my field season in northern Labrador, I thought I would leave you with a really good numismatic error puzzle. At first glance, this might seem like a simple mated pair, but wait, is it an obverse die cap too? Or, is this a double struck coin? How does one get a coin with two reverse sides, wiithout being a brockage, oh wait, there is a brockage, but on the other coin...

Have a good look, and try to figure this one out (including the sequence of strikes to form it), perhaps there are more coins involved here, but not part of this set...

I'll be around occasionally in the next six weeks, but via satellite internet. I'll be back with the answers in August, if you have not figured it out by then... Have a good summer!!

First coin.
Cent was struck and stuck to the die. Here is the tricky part. The die cap had to be introduced after the striking of this coin. How did that happen? There are some possibilities.

Second coin,
A coin was struck, the other coin was struck, feeder finger failure, coin backed up into other coin, they were smashed together.

Feeder fingers are not used at the Royal Canadian Mint - they have other mechanisms to feed the coin presses...

Right here... in the middle of nowhere, straddling the Quebec and Labrador border, a good 45 minute helicopter ride from Schefferville...
