Hello I'm new to coin coin roll hunting and collecting in general. I'm unsure of what dates of coins to look for and which ones to look out for. I just recently went through a box of nickels and kept all the pre-1982 coins which totalled 275. Should I be keeping these or not? I'm just really confused what to do with other coins in general. Thanks.

Keep the pre-1982 nickels. They are made of pure nickel and their bullion value now exceeds their face value. Some dealers buy them per oz. The RCM is melting all non-multi-ply-plated steel coins, so they may disappear from circulation in a few years.

I have read that it's illegal to melt the coins but who would I sell them too? Then is it better to look through dimes or quarters then what years should I look for? Is it worth looking for errors and varieties? Sorry I just have no idea but I love looking through coins.

1967 and older quarters, and dimes are 80% silver (there are 50% silver 67 dimes/quarters as well) and in 68 there are 50% silver dimes and quarters.

if you are looking for varieties and numismatic coinage, you need to look at this site http://www.coinsandcanada.com

I have now sorted through my nickels and not sure if it's worth putting the nickels that are worth 10 cents in the cardboard protecting slips or just return them. Thoughts?

what I do on my circulated coins, that I want to keep, is put them into a roll. I label the roll what they are, maybe a year maybe date range, or even something like 1990 bare bellies.

I only put coins into 2x2's that are worth a few dollars or more.

Just a thought...If a 2001 nickel is worth 10 cents now in AU, isn't it worth it to keep them? Especially with the speculation of the nickel possibly being pulled from circulation.
