I have several morgans that are now toning on the periphery, is acetone the correct response to this,(sincerely hoping that they were not cleaned at some point, they have been in library of coin albums and dansco albums

No, acetone does nothing to toning. But why do you think that's a bad thing when in fact it is a VERY good thing. Album Toned morgans sell for higher prices than comparable ones and it is also a good indicator of surface originality

Quote: Album Toned morgans sell for higher prices than comparable ones That's not always true. The toned Morgans that carry a premium over their un-toned counterparts typically have better colors (reds, blues, yellows). Average album toning like the one pictured, won't bring a premium or hurt the value until it becomes very dark and close to terminal.

Mostly agreed aces, BUT that is only true with very ugly or black toning so I disagree with your last statement. As for the coin you posted I guarantee it will garner a small premium over blast white. The more beautiful and saturated the colors the more $ of coarse

As a general rule and from what I see at coin shows, toned coins just don't sell as fast as untoned ones. Yes there are those that like toned coins but mostly people prefer originality. Place your Albums in Zip Lock Plastic bags.

better yet, get a small desiccant package and put it in the bag also. Zip locks are not air tight. And any coin I want to keep from toning will not be in contact with cardboard (like the pages of an album are) anyway. The plastic strips on front and back are safe, but my guess is the cardboard around the coins circumference can retain moisture (from humidity) and kill the original luster.

The coin pictured by aceskings is just what is happening to my morgans. I personally do not like this toning. I do not like to clean coins. I guess I will keep them since I only need 18 more morgans for the set, excluding the 1895 of course which I do not think it belongs in the albums since they were only minted in proof and some got into circulation.

Silver toning is caused by exposure to hydrogen sulfide which is prevalent in air.
Acetone is a very volatile organic solvent, it cannot cause toning since it evaporates almost instantly. Also, the use of acetone is not considered "cleaning" since it will not damage coins and leaves no detectable signs after using.
