I just purchased this coin and was wondering if it is indeed the rare round leaves with cross/bow tie variety. The number of known pieces seems to be creeping up since first discovered. Is the latest number of 39 reasonable or will it continue to rise as more people go through their collections?

A larger picture might help but from what I can see, it looks like
a rounded leaf.
There must be a lot more than 39 out there as the ICCS population
report has 54 certified themselves.

Thanks for your input. I've included a close up pic of important leaves. Does anyone have an idea as to the value? There does not seem to be a lot of info on this variety.

My 2015 Charlton price guide for the 1909 Maple leaves (rounded) and Cross/BowTie suggests a value of $250 for VG-8 or $475 for F-12......and up to $1,500 for AU-50.

If you purchased this from someone simply selling a 1909 5c who was unfamiliar with this relatively rare variety, indeed you made an excellent buy!

Thanks for the info. It was just listed as 1909 5 cent on ebay. Last time I saw one of these I bid $100 and was outbid at the last second. I tried it again but no one even came close to matching my bid. I got it for less than one would expect to pay for the pointed leaf variety. Usually several people spot these coins and the bidding is lively. I was fortunate this time.

Excellent! Much like you, from time to time I also keep an eye out for what appears to be uncommon varieties selling for the price of the typical. It's worked for me a time or two and yes, the auctions are usually hard to win. But more often than not the photos are blurry and if I win I soon find out it's not what I thought it was. Oh well, beats wasting money on lottery tickets....at least I get something in return!

I agree. I picked up a 1908 Large 8 five cent piece graded by ICCS (MS 60 Cleaned)for $76. I know cleaned coins are worth less but didn't really expect to get the coin at that price. I often will bid on coins that aren't getting much action either to help the seller or to get a good deal. I've often won bids on coins I really didn't need doing this tho. It's still kind of fun.

Oh that's funny, I also sometimes bid on ebay auctions for exactly that same reason. Coin collectors usually have a lot of duplicates so what's one more at a good price! And it always makes me chuckle because it reminds me of a habit of my late grandfather, a farmer, who had old graineries filed to the beams with useless stuff that he bought at local auction sales but didn't need and had no intention of buying...just because he was trying to help out a neighbour or friend by upping the bid.
