Was curious if anyone on the forums has a collection of a single type of coin in grades MS - G? I don't mean they have to be the same dates just different grades. I think it would be neat to see the wear as you go down in grades. I've been thinking about starting a Walking Liberty half dollar collection like this as they're my favorite coin and some of the lower grades I can get key dates for, as price would be less and add a touch of flavor. A few years ago I purchased 35 walkers in an album for $300 dollars. There were a few key dates in low grades including 1921p and a few other semi keys that I ended up selling to purchase more silver and I've been regretting it ever since. I was mainly just a silver hoarder at first and shortly after selling some of the keys started becoming more interested in the numismatics. I also think that if I obtain almost every grade it will help me self grade coins online, at coin store, and through CRH.

It is not common to pursue such sets but it is far from unheard of. I know many folks have put such sets together. You are absolutely correct that doing so, especially on such a well loved series as the Walkers, will help immensely in learning current grading standards for that type. You didn't mention it, but I assume you are thinking of getting this set graded by a single TPG?

Yeah my plan is to use purchase NGC slabs as the only slabbed coins currently in my collection are all in NGC slabs.

I'm actually an NGC can myself. It seems, at least to me, that they are a bit more consistent over time. Good luck putting such a fun set together.

This is actually a very common practice, although it is usually done with Morgan dollars. I have heard that it can be very beneficial.

I have this as an adjunct to my in progress set of NGC MS-62 or better Indian Head cents. The last page in the last album has my grade set, in which I have: AG-3 G-6 VG-10 F-15 VF-30 XF-45 AU-58 MS-63 I intend to add a Proof to the set when I find one that I both like and can afford. I originally thought to do them all with the same date, but soon decided that that wasn't practical.

Bill Fivaz does this and sells the sets to other dealers.

I'm working - slowly, when I see a good price (and not the Stack's W57th Street garbage) on an NGC and PCGS set of 3cs...

Thanks for the link JBuck. Really thinking about doing this with the walkers as some of the common walkers in higher grades are quite affordable as well the key dates in lower grades. Plus I'm only 29 so I can take my time compiling this set. Hmmm.... Might be starting a grade set along with my walker date/mm set.

You could also do the alternate - especially if you want an excuse to look at lots of stuff even if you don't buy.
Put together a set of a SINGLE grade from a SINGLE company that shows the range... the "I can't BELIEVE that THAT is an XF40" or whatever grade you pick.
You can go from the oldest holders - which if they haven't been cracked out mean that everyone things they are pretty honestly graded, up to the Stacks W 57th St collection garbage... and then to the more modern high security holders.

I'm doing exactly that for 1921 Peace dollars. This single year type coin intrigued me. My 'grading set' range is PO01 through MS65. I have all but the AU examples (AU50, AU53, AU55,and AU58) in PCGS holders. Forum member Not-Mint-to-Be is pursuing a similar set for the 1900 Lafayette Dollar commemorative. Believe he is stopping at AU58 and needs only a few to complete it. A 'complete' Walking Liberty half dollar grading set is going to be tough as there is only one PCGS certified PO01 Walker .... that coin is in my collection and I'm not selling it. Best of wishes however you decide to pursue this ... it's a fun way to collect and gain knowledge as well. David

I did this with 1909 VDB Lincolns. The dies were new in 1909 so it took that issue out of the grading equation.

Thad, did you ever create a post showing them? I seem to recall someone posting a set, but my searches are coming up empty.
