In 1873, the Putnam County Bank was organized and opened for business. The Conger family ran the bank until 1878 when Hugh D. Marshall bought the bank. Shortly afterwards, he changed the name to Marshall's Bank it continued operations under that title until the third quarter of 1883.
Mr. Marshall applied for a national bank charter which was approved on October 26, 1883. The Marshall National Bank was given Charter # 3068. December 1st, 1883 marked the first day of business as a national bank.
While searching through the digitized newspapers online, I found one from December 15, 1909 that contained extracts from 26 years earlier: "The Marshall National Bank had just received its first circulating medium, and was commencing business as a National Bank." (Source #3)
Hugh D. Marshall was President of the bank until his death in 1913. His son, Neal Marshall assumed the presidency and remained until the bank closed in 1934.
The Marshall National Bank issued five different types of notes. They were 1882 Brown Backs, 1902 Red Seals, 1902 Date Backs, 1902 Plain Backs and Series 1929 type-1's.
Several years ago I saw an 1882 Brown Back $5 on this bank for sale online but didn't buy it because at the time I didn't have the money the dealer was asking. I have never seen another since.
Heritage sold a 1902 Plain Back in September 2011. Two months later, Lyn Knight sold a small size $10.
Here's my small size $10 on this bank. Neal B. Marshall, President and Carl L Crooks, Cashier
