Hello everyone !
I'm new here and have been collecting coins for about 6 months.
I've been pretty active and started on a half dollar type set and collected some key dates of various types, as well as some gold coins. I'm kinda impatient by nature so I don't plan on getting an album and filling holes.
Who goes to coin shows ? Edited by 1sikevo 01/03/2008 7:08 pm

Hi 1sikevo, Probably most forum members attend shows when it's convenient. If you check the main forum page you will find the Numismatic Calendar section where many shows are listed. If you can find one near you, check it out! I can almost always find something I want at a coin show. So, what are some of those key dates you've acquired? You can use the forum to share your finds!

Hello and Welcome. I missed going to the worlds money fair in Milwaukee this past August due to no one wanting to go with me. But...I am watching the calendar and seeing which show is nearest to me

So far, in my half dollar type, I have a 1795 FH O-117a R.4, a 1806 DB O-120a R.4, a 1830 CBH 0-117 R.2, 1875 SL, 1908-D Barber, 1957-D Franklin and 1964 JFK. I'm missing the DB with the small eagle reverse. For Lincolns, I have the 1909-S VDB and the 1914-D. Still after the 1922 weak D. Still going after the Indian 1877 and 1909-S. Have the complete Flying Eagle series (yes, including THE coin). For gold, I have the 1908 No Motto and the 1926 St. Gaudens and 1907 Lib Eagle. For Washington quarters, I have both 1932-D and S. Been to one small local coin show... someday, I want to see a major one.

Lucky, there is a show in Madison on the 20th at the Sheraton on John Nolan Drive. Also, I think there is one coming up in Franskville in February.

Is there a site for shows by state? I can't find anything for Here in Missouri.

I go to about 3 coin shows a Month. If your in the Illinois area, just type in Illinois Coin shows in Google. There is one on each Sunday of the Month, every Month. First, Second and Third Sundays. All are within about 15 miles for me. Most are just about 10 to 15 miles west of Chicago. All are free entraces, free parking, lousy coffee. Lemont and Itasca are rather on the small size. 20 to 40 dealers. Countryside ranges from about 80 to 120 dealers. Not sure but looks that way. Occationally there are some biggies at the Rosemont Convention Center. Many hundreds of dealers from all over the place. Then there is the international coin shows accross the street from that place at a hotel that I can never remember the name of. My experiences at coin shows is you can never beat the prices at places like the internet, coin shops, hobby shops, auction houses. Once you get to know dealers at coin shows you'll find prices of coins just can not be beat. And no taxes, insurances, postage, handling fees either. I love coin shows. I miss some due to conflcts in days with the gun shows, knife shows, computer shows, train shows, camera shows. Almost all on Sundays.

If your near a border with other states, type in those also. Occationally some are not listed so you can also try the Coin World Web site for their listings of coin shows. Some on line dealers and other coin forums also list coin shows. For example there is a web site called jmscoins.com and on the far left side he has a link to coin shows. Mostly due to the fact those are the ones he attends.

At your location, the nearest shows would probably be in Springfield which doesn't really look all that close to you anyway. St. Louis has several shows a year and Sedalia also has a couple as well. I did see a show in Lebanon not too far from you on March 29, 2008 @the Kenneth Cowan Civic Center, 500 East Elm. Also, there is a club based in Springfield that might be of some help to you http://ozarks-coin-club.org/

Coin shows are the bomb for collectors. I get the best coins and deals from them.

1sikevo, You have a very impressive set of coins for a "newbie" collector! You are the only other collector I know of who has an 1806 O-120a half. Can you post a photo? I understand that late-die-state examples of O-120a are most desirable. Such coins have the big Cud on the eagle's shield. I believe mine is close to the final die state: I'd be very interested in seeing your coin for comparison. FYI, I found this coin at the big Long Beach (CA) Coin and Collectibles expo which is held three times each year. Big shows like this one are definitely the way to go if you want lots of buying choices!
