Thanks Slider - I am trying to get a feel for what I should be looking for. What is the lowest MS PCGS or NGC condition you've seen that still had the good strike?

I like sa330206's first ebay listing out of all three. Much better value too.

You can find a 1921 solid strike in MS 61.

This one's pretty strong, both on the hair and the eagle's leg. It's a better strike than the current $5000+ MS-66's.

I looked for a proof die obverse, and found nothing listed, but they turn up fairly often priced below $1000. This is the 1921 full strike hair detail you want. Pardon the photo quality.

That one looks pretty good sa330206. There's still some weakness where the central hair crosses the crown, but I might be nitpicking the difference between proof and regular dies on that difference. The eagle's feathers above the D are almost full. This shows better than 99% of 1921's. TPG's accept a pancake flat hair strike in an MS66, resulting in a lot of coins free of tiny flaws but with mediocre overall appearance.

The strike looks good, but the coin lacks luster based on photo. A lot of them MS 1921s have a greyish luster lacking eye appeal.

Lots of fakes out there but feel free to check out Zimbabwe Currency Collectibles. Guaranteed and you can always return if you are not satisfied. I would recommend getting them authenticated though unless they already have been

Believe it or not, that 1921 I posted is an Anacs MS62. I only have a few Peace dollars but the detail on that 1921 (especially the feathers) blows away the MS64s I have from pcgs. I guess I realized I don't know much about grading..I always thought Anacs had a bad rep but that 1921 is beautiful.

slider - I got the coin today and it's full of luster. I'm not sure these pics will do it justice but I'm very happy with my purchase. Like I said I only have a few Peace dollars but this BY FAR blows away the PCGS MS63 and MS64 coins I have. I'm still confused on why it's graded so low.

For reference heres a PCGS MS-65. It doesn't even come close to my MS 62..

I also wanted to say thanks again to everyone for their insight. If I didn't get the tips/info I did here, I probably would have settled for PCGS 1921 in much lower shape based solely on the slab!

Wow, that coin has a strong strike and luster. You now have a collector's coin that you can be proud to own. The reverse on the coin is outstanding. Remember the strike is not a factor for grading on the 1921 Peace dollar. It looks like from the photos that the marks on the cheek are the reason for the MS62.

Nice pickup sa330206. You might want to see whether it has the diagnostic die scratches for the proof dies. They're easily visible with 10x magnification and cross-lighting. The strongest of them are to the right of E in WE.

After 1921 solid strikes are much easier to find. I used to dig strong strike 1925-P's out of the bullion cans at my LCS. Here's an example.

1924 and 1926 Philadelphias are also good coins to search. Branch mint strikes are mostly flat and mediocre, especially San Francisco.

I will give you another hard to find common Peace dollar in a grade MS64 and below in blast white or brilliant luster is the 1923 S. This coin is common in MS grades below MS 65 and rare in MS 65. Most of the 1923 S MS coins have a drab or greyish luster.

I appreciate the information on this thread and want to thank sa330206 for asking his questions and the others for posting such helpful answers.

I'm at the state sa330206 was when he started the thread. The bags of junk silver have been affordable, but those worn out coins have drawn me towards collecting sets of higher quality coins. As many have suggested, Peace dollars will be my first set and I'm spending time reading forums and absorbing advice rather than jumping onto ebay.

Admittedly, I'm immediately jealous of sa330206 beautiful 1921! I admire both the coin and the nice job he did patiently waiting for an excellent deal.
