Oh, alright; it's not a tale of three different 'Peace's, but of one Peace lit three different ways...

Comments, thoughts?

Yep...you're on your way. You need to adjust the white balance (WB) to account for the lighting you are using. That way you will get pics of your coins that are true-to-color. You also need to work on that lighting a bit to reduce shadows. Exposure with the current lighting seems to be off 1/2 to a full f/stop, maybe more? (You need a slower shutter speed at the same aperture to let in more light.) Are you using a tripod? If not, getting one can help. There's also some instructions and pictures on this forum for building s simple light table that will take the place of a tripod.)

Best wishes.

Thanks for the comments !

Yea, I need to sort out the white balance thing. I am so anxious to experiment with lighting I'm leaving the camera on "auto" for everything else. Bad! But next round of coins shoots, I'll make it a point to try to fix that (even though I can fix it with software, I'd like to get it right in the camera in the first place).

Even though lighting has been my main focus so far (especially before I got this camera), sadly all I've managed to do is make a bunch of silly shots! However, there is a LOT to lighting. So far, I've been doing all kinds of variations of axial lighting with *one* light source. I think I can do a lot to take away the shadows with a second softer light (diffused) but I want to get some idea of the subtleties of the axial thing first, and that's hard to do when the 2nd light makes it so . . . well, uniform.

I did all these shots with a tripod and using the timer function on the camera. I tried making a copy stand, which worked GREAT with my little point and click, but my SLR is a bit on the heavy side. It rocks and shakes at the height I need to be at for some shots. I think I just need a thicker beam, haha. But tripod shooting isn't bad either - it's very stable, if not as convenient (and I got some shadows from the tripod arms in a few shots, whoops). Still, I do want to setup some kind of more stable, more easily "setable" copy table. But that's a project for a few weeks from now (when funds are replentished - the wife is on me about spending too much this month and it's only the 4th day!).

When I get some free time (work, ugh), and not just a few minutes to post, but a few hours to really mess around, I want to setup the tripod and not move it, and get a coin, and with the same lighting, take a series of photos at different apertures, shutter speeds, ISO, and see what it seems to do.

Well, thanks again for the comments, I really appreciate it.

Oh, you'll be taking great coin shots in no time! But to learn all that your camera is capable of will take awhile unless you are a faster learner than I am! LOL.

Best wishes.

Wow, nice photos. What type of camera are you using?

Nevermind, I read your other post and found out the answer, Canon 40D.
