I've never seen a Morgan dollar with an appearance quite like this:

Any ideas as to what caused this? I have to admit that I like it. There's just something about weird, crusty Morgans that draws my attention. It must be the stories they could tell, if only.

This coin appears to have been well-circulated, then perhaps stored in a medium such as an envelope, imparting the unusual toning.

I would agree with CWC. Probably a high sulfur content envelope could cause this on a circulated Morgan.

Glue possible adhesive along with circulation and improper storage....We will never know the real story sadly.

I believe the look is more damage than anything, almost like it was stuck to paper or paint in a drawer for many years, acetone might help, "might" as this looks like more than just some organic gunk stuck to it, possibly pitted and corroded.

I'm not a Morgan guy, but I'll bet this is a fake. I mean come on, you can see on reverse what looks like rust. and shouldn't the stars on obverse be more sharper.
not to mention the whole coin looks like it was attacked by some flesh eating disease .
