Definitely american!

Some of the more experienced people should chime in soon to tell you how to clean it.

You found a U.S. Indian Head cent. no matter how you clean
it the coin looks too far gone to get to a normal state.
but it's a keeper. nice find.

Save the coins you find that could do with a cleaning until you have a number to do. Otherwise, the time isn't worth the set up for just one coin.

Google Electrolysis, and you can set up a safe and easy way to remove excessive corrosion from most metals.

BUT PLEASE NOTE that you don't want to clean anything that might have any real value. The 1901 Indian Head cent, as has been noted, is too far gone to have any collector value, although it is still a darned neat find.

Nice find, but it will never be anything but a common-date cull, with little value at all.
Rest in Peace

Regardless of value, it's got to be pretty exciting to find something that old.
