I've been meaning to post this one for a while but have been busy at work. You can see a piece of the copper cladding peeling up following the funny looking "D" in "GOD"; Here are a couple of pics:

Either that or contact with another coin has caused the coin to flake like so.

From half of 1982 and onward, cents are copper plated. Since this one is before 1982, it is copper. It is an alloy of copper and is never plated. How can its cladding fall off it it never was cladded.

Looks like a small lamination error.

I agree it is a lamination. I recently came up with a theory on why we see laminations on coins. I wondered if during the upset process, it makes the blanks that have slight imperfections in them, loosen during this process? After/before the coin is struck, they may loosen and fall off leaving what we are finding today. With the zinc cents we see less because of the purity of the material and not being mixed with anything. Then plated after they run through the upset process.

Great graphic, Coop! I agree with you that the likely cause of many of these is during the upset process since it is exerting a lateral force on a blank that has an inherent or incipient weakness in the bonding of the alloy mix at that spot hence, delaminating a layer or two.
