I'm new to atrributing the Newcomb varieties. How did I do?

1851-Large-Cent-N-14?

1851-Large-Cent-N-14?

Pointer #13: I really love this ancient gold coin for its rarity and historical significance, more so than the 1913 nickel.
Rest in Peace

Well, I'll be darned there, TC.

When I first looked at this coin my first thought was that there wasn't enough detail to be certain of a die marriage assignment.

Especially since this date has 34 such marriages.

But I hauled the Newcomb / Clapp out to see what I could see, and I believe you are absolutely right on your assignment of N-14.

As much time as you spend helping others on this forum I didn't want this to set all day without a response for you.

I'm really glad that you were RIGHT!

That's one heck of a specimen to begin your attributions with. If you can attribute this one, you'll do fine. I was skeptical with the corrosion, but I agree....if it's not an N-14, it'll do 'til one comes along. Nice going.

It was easy because it was the only variety with this obverse die. Narrowed my choices down quite a bit.
