Was there a melt-fest at the mint that year? I'm wondering why it's so much more (1.4 million minted) than the 1912-S with only 238-K minted.

I'm wondering the same exact thing why an 1885 in g-4 condition is worth $500?

There is little doubt that survival percentage of the 1912-S is higher than the 1885. Essentially, the 1885 was the third year the Liberty nickel was minted, it wasn't "new" any longer, and the coins circulated freely, as evidenced by the sheer number of them that survive today in AG and G condition. The '12-s was the final year of mintage (not counting the 1913 which wasn't supposed to be minted at all) and people saved them.
