005 - I do not see the horizontal serif at the end of the inner curl of the "G" - which it should have with 006.

If you are suggesting this could have removed the horizontal serif...I do not see how that could have happened without affecting the rest of the G.

But...I have been wrong once or twice before!

What year is this? If 1988, then it looks like a 005 on both of them to me. The second one is showing Die Deterioration. Right side of coin, doubling on the right side. (not a doubled die though)

Compare the size of the AME to these images:
RDV-006-Or-005?
The 005 "M" is rounded. the 006 devices are flat. (circulation can flatten devices)

Note the "FG". Note the location of the upper loop of the "G"?
RDV-006-Or-005?
The loop looks like a RDV-006 normal for this year. The die appears as thinned from die polishing. Note AMERICA?

So...is that why I cannot see the horizontal serif on the G in either coin? I don't really understand how that happens without affecting the rest of the G?

Also note the bottom of the G. 005 is rounded as it returns up, 006 flairs to a point. These are 006

Another point to keep in mind is that the 1988 RPD-006 are mostly early die state reverses. If you have a 1988 coin you are struggling with that has a lot of die scratches, then it is most likely a 005. (the 006 reverse were used late in the year and was supposed to be only on the 1989 cents. But because of the shortage of dies, some were put into use at the end of that year)
