I am in my thirties and started collecting with my father when I was in kindergarten. I was intreagued from the start, and through middle school and high school I was always checking pocket change for rogue silver quarters or wheat pennies, all of which I still have to this day. My grandfather on my mothers side was an avid collector of American Eagles, Mint Sets, and Commemoratives and got me interested in the proofs and direct from the mint coins. He passed away in January after a long battle with Parkinsons and his safe full of coins and paper money is now going to be sold of so I have volunteered for the job of trying to get the most of the collection. Some of it I am going to keep, the silver dollars and halves he aquired in his lifetime, and old dimes and half pennies. I think a few of my cousins might be interested in the mint sents from the years they were born but nobody else in the family has ever shown any interest in the collection. I collect mostly 1800-present day US coins but also have a very wide variety of 20th century world coins that I got from yard sales, and flea markets as a kid. Mostly 1920-1950s Europe, Canada and Mexico. I have been doing a lot of research over the past few months on his collection as well as my own and stumbled upon this site. I am mostly here to ask questions, research new topics or categories of collecting, and talk with other like minded folks about collecting, storing and caring for coins. The name mayflower2020 is in honor of my grandfather. He was a proud member of the Mayflower Society and a colelctor of US Mint Commemorative Coins. It was just announced this month that they are going to Congress to get a 400th Anniversary Mayflower Commemorative Coin for 2020 so I thought it fitting. I only wish he could have got his hands on one. Thanks for reading.

Welcome, Mayflower! Neat story about your grandfather. Since he was a member of the Mayflower Society, you ought to join if you haven't already. It would make the tribute coin just that much more meaningful when (if?) it gets minted and you get one.

Hi Mayflower2020.....loved the "so far" in your greeting....do you anticipate finding hate & discontent at this site? You won't.
I have recently joined after observing the site for some time...this is one of the best organized and respected sites available.
I have not been a member long enough to use "we", but respect, courtesy and freely shared knowledge from experts are the hall marks...
Please be both welcome and at ease here...
