Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago I posted this 1846 Large Cent that I had bought and was skeptical about. As it turns out, it was re colored. Some members on the forum recommended an acetone bath to get rid of the re coloring. I have finally gotten around to giving it an acetone bath and I am very impressed with the way it turned out. The color has made a very clear change from dark brown to gray. This was the first acetone bath I have performed. Any input is welcome.

Michael

The "After" pics are a bit unclear, but "gray" is not a normal circ LC color of course. I guess this gives us some idea of why the prior owner decided to fool with it.

Yes, a sort of nice medium brown color, much like an old Lincoln Cent you may have found once. Not gray for sure!

So would we be leaning toward the idea that this coin is a fake?

I could have SWORN that a 1946 small date large cent would have been a fake. OTOH, I have a MUCH harder time attributing an 1846 small date large cent...

(sorry, edweather - I just couldn't pass it up...)

Let it tone naturally. Put it on a slab of wood on the window sill.

So I took better photos... what does everyone think? I believe the remaining dirt or whatever it is might cause it to look grey... and how long should I let it naturally tone for? also what does the slab of wood do? is it vital that I use wood, or could I just place it on a paper plate or something of that nature?
