Ran across a listing on ebay for empty LESP packaging. My first thought was "who would be silly enough to pay $15 for an empty box?" However, I realized that I have extra silver proof sets that I'm hanging on to. All I need to do is pick up a proof eagle and I have an LESP at $20 under the mint issue price. No wonder this set isn't doing well.

Yes, this set does not offer anything unique in its contents, so the entire premium is being paid for that packaging. Sad to see is going for so little.

Yep, that's one set on which I'm glad I didn't fall for the hype. I buy a lot of stuff I probably shouldn't, but even I knew it was stupid to pay that much of a premium just for the packaging....

I always thought that the set was just a way for the mint to sell some of their leftover coins before the year ends.

What is the LESP? Nothing with which you need to concern yourself. Move along.

I looked at the sales figures and based on time since release, this set is about 10,000 orders behind previous sets. Perhaps it's that the mint has released more desirable items lately, or maybe collectors are tired of it. Either way, the mint will have to release the 2015 set some time this year and if this set only sells 40,000, it will create an interesting secondary market.
