Does anyone know anything about this coin? I've never seen this before and am hoping someone can enlighten me. I don't own it but think it's pretty neat. Thanks for looking..

Standard Silver Half Dollar Pattern, official Mint work. A bunch were struck as Proofs in 1869-1870 from varying materials with and without reeding, in a couple different basic patterns. Depending on grade it could be a $5000+ coin.

SsuperDdave, it's graded PF64 by PCGS but I had never seen one before. Thanks for the info! Based on that grade what kind of money are we talking? Thanks again!

The design looks like Judd J-945, but there were an insane number of similar patterns in 1870 - most of the similar type did not have the Phrygian cap, though. J-946 was in copper, but I didn't find an image in a quick search.

Auction results for similar patterns were in the $4500 to $9500 range.

What was going on in 1870? Anything specific or just playing around with Comstock silver?
