Outstanding cherrypick! I found some killer Memorial examples in solid OBW rolls too. Too bad it's not a WAM. MS-66/67 (hard to tell, pics small)

A WAM would have made my day! Is there a way to make the images larger? I used the image enhancer program (A++++ on that), and this seems to be the largest I can go. Or would it help to take closeups - cutting the images into halves or thirds of the coin?

I have no problem with 68. It is hard to make assumptions like that without the coin in hand though.

That spot to the right of VDB is a deal breaker for me. Is it a wavy step variety? John1

No, I don't think it's a wavy steps, but I was wondering if or how much the steps would affect grading - that is, because they're somewhat indistinct or weakly struck (?) in the middle area.

I'm not sure you the steps are weakly struck. You might have an incipient plating issue occurring on the steps. Notice how the thicker steps are not parallel to the thinner steps below it? Then at least six steps merge into one with what might be small, early-stage plating blisters. I can't tell from the pics for sure though...

Thanks, profiler, for that informative comment.
I've been wondering whether to send this coin into PCGS for grading, and even though it seems doubtful to me it could reach MS68 (which is what it would take to be financially viable), I still may go ahead and do it - partly for the experience (I've never sent a coin in for certification before), and partly because I just like it's eye-appeal and am interested in seeing how it does.

Ray, I like your perspective on that. It's easy to put a price on education--but it's the value, which often far exceeds the price, that is important in the long run. You could buy a book on grading for the same cost of certifying your coin but you have a personal connection to this coin. Going through the third-party grading process for the first time will be instructional, regardless of the eventual grade.
With your personal connection to the coin (finding it, holding it, viewing it, studying it, researching it, asking questions about it--and OWNING it), there's inherent subjectivity in grading. It's human nature that sellers of coins "mentally" grade differently than buyers or owners of the same. (A famous example of this concept is how differently Morton Thiokol viewed the objective data on the failure of their solid rocket boosters compared to NASA's view of the same data.)
Anyway, long story short: I like your idea for what it'll teach you. :)

Quote: You might have an incipient plating issue occurring on the steps. This is a fine-point in the design, it's an area where the die and hub both wear causing coins to lose definition. For some years it's nearly impossible to find full and complete steps due to hub wear.

I agree with you, BadThad. If you look to the far right in the middle of the steps where they come together, seems like there might be some smallish raised bumps there. Can't tell from the pics.
