For those that haven't read my intro post, newbie here. I've been amateur collecting (primarily AEs and proof sets) since 2001 when I was 12 and slowly started collecting Peace dollars after awhile. I bought this 1921 Peace dollar a couple of years ago at an estate auction (I'll admit I had the Storage Wars fever). I wanted to have it graded, so I took it to a coin dealer at the time to have it sent out. After looking at it for a bit, he told me it was cleaned and not worth grading. The dealer didn't seemed too enthusiastic with me being there in the first place since I was only looking to have it graded, rather than buying, so I'm wondering if it was cleaned or if he just wanted me away (he didn't explained how it was cleaned which is also why I'm curious). As you can tell, I'm more of an amateur at collecting since I'm not sure what to look for in regards to noticing a clean coin to untouched coin, so any advice on what condition this is in or how you could tell it was cleaned would be appreciated.

Hard to tell, but probably not worth big grading fees to find out. Maybe high VF condition. Throw it ANACS' way during one of their specials. Will only cost you $21 for 2 coins plus postage to send it to them.

I was considering bringing it with me to the World's Fair of Money to have it graded if it would be worth it.

The photos do not show the coin as being cleaned. If the coin has been cleaned, it will show hair line scratches. Sometimes to see the hair line scratches, you will need a loupe to view the scratches. If the coin has been cleaned and grades VF details cleaned, the coin value is about $60 and it will cost about $30 to have the coin graded unless you find a grading special as noted by Ed.

It is an excellent idea to take the coin with you to the coin show and get some opinions about the coin being cleaned and graded before submitting to be graded.

Much of the details are tough to see with these photos. If you are going to a major show, such as the one you mention, there will be plenty of dealers who will be happy to take a look at your coin.

The only thing to remember is that:

A dealer specializing in $1000+ coins may not be that excited about one worth much less, although many of the dealers achieved that level of costly inventory by being NICE.

Don't ask for a grade opinion from a dealer who is BUSY. If a dealer has three seats in front of his table full with others waiting to look at his inventory, he isn't going to be thrilled about giving an opinion about a grade. If you really like what that dealer sells, cruise for a while until he is free (or at least reasonably priced!)

Looks VF-20 and hard to say for sure if it was ever cleaned.

Here are a couple of new pics of it if anyone wants to take a second look. Tried my best, but don't know if the lighting helps. Keep in mind, this is in between a plastic wrap holder.
