I've just started getting into grading, and been practicing by guessing for coins posted here and looking at what others say. I'm usually not too far off for all those people that are really into grading, do you just eye it like I have been or should I study the specific spots to look at for each coin? any suggestions to get better?

I used the PCGS online Photograde, and still do. After a lot of practice you will get better at it, and learn what to look for on a particular coin. As the old question goes, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" Practice, practice, practice.

One of the most useful books I first used, and I studied this book to death when I was so young, roughly around the time when it came out, was the Official guide to coin grading and Counterfeit Detection. They are quite pricey, about $30-$50, but I got my copy at Borders before they closed for really cheap.

One approach is to pick your favorite coin type and learn all the high points on the coin then study photograde for that series from poor to MS70. When you see posted coins for that series here then attempt to grade it within 10 points. Then go to photograde and try to match it to the closest photo. See how close you were with your initial assessment. No cheating looking at everyone else's post until you narrow it down. Once you are comfortable with that series move on to another one. After a couple months you will see significant improvement in your grading abilities. A great site for learning grading and coin high points go to coingrading.com and select how to grade coins. Then select grading other series. Each series is listed showing the areas that will wear first. There are also great articles on grading there.

I can usually get pretty close with a knee jerk grade, but I've been doing it a while. I still break out the PCGS Phootgrade app on my phone when purchasing coins. I hate buying a coin for VF money and going home to discover that I really have a F-15 coin. I'm not ashamed to admit I use it. I use it on every major purchase just to see if I agree with the grade/price.
