It depends on the indoor relative humidity of your home in the winter, where you live, and where the item is stored.
If you live in the southern states, you don't need to be concerned. But in the northern climes, unless you artificially humidify your home during the winter, then most paper/wood products will undergo a slight shrinkage, especially in a confined space. This often causes cracks in furniture tops, for example, and could well account for a small shrinkage in coin slots.
At the very least, do not store your albums in a closed closet during the winter if you live up north.
You may dismiss this, but I believe this might have been the problem here.
