NN columnist Dave Harper panned the local coin show held this weekend in Omaha. I live in the area, am not a club member but have attended the club show and have the following observation.

There are two monthly shows (commercial) in this area and the dealers at the club show seem to be a different cast of characters than at the commercial shows. Last time I went to the club show it was nearly deserted- maybe a dozen dealers all with overpriced merchandise. Guys selling BU Lincolns from the 50's for several dollars, that sort of thing. I just quit going two years ago. There wasn't much there for average collectors filling spaces, lots of slabs and dealers with unpriced coins- I usually don't bother asking on those.

I tried commenting on the story on the NN website and cannot get registered. They have some cryptic question to answer correctly before recognizing you as a human, apparently. Very frustrating.

I went to the show, and it was a lot of fun. I was only able to stay for an hour, and I didnt buy anything but I signed up for the Omaha Coin Club and bought raffle tickets. It was a lot of fun!

The last time I went to one of their shows was in 2013 or maybe 2012. All I recall now is that the atmosphere just seemed dead. Dealers with way overpriced stuff and little traffic, I was only there less than an hour so maybe I hit the how at a bad time but that was the impression I got. I recall I left there after searching for some coins on my list and finding them over priced for the grade by some dealers I never saw before. I stopped at a local coin shop on the way home and found what I'd been looking for for a lot less.

I wish them well- we need all the good shows we can get these days.
