The punch on the 1979-D cents was a problem. That is why are large percentage of coins from that year (yes, all denominations) show this split looking lower serif. After you know this, then you see it happened on many different dies until they replaced the punch.

So it's not an RPM in your opinion Coop? I can see something underneath the MM as well

They are so common on the 1979 cents and the punch was the cause, it cancels out the split serif idea. Not a RPM.
