So as a merit badge counselor for the BSA, I had a scout say that the early US coinage seemed "dumb" with all the extra denominations they had back in the day ie. Half Cents, 2 cents, 3 cents , Half Dime, 20 cent etc. I told him during the same period in Great Britain, they had more denominations that we did which got me to thinking, how about putting together a small denomination set to visually see what they actually had. Well, here is a set that took me about a year to complete. No gold though :( No third sovereign, half sovereign, sovereign, double sovereign, or 5 sovereign. Too much $$$$. Here's a pic of the collect. I have it hosted at photobucket so you should be to blow it up. I typed in the values and how many to the Pound (£) and how many to the Pence (d). Darn hard set to assemble I might add.

Very nice set! Love the odd denominations like the 1 1/2 pence and the quarter and third farthings!

Very nice set!

One of the things that I've always found amusing about British coinage is that it takes 19,200 coins of the smallest denomination to equal one of the largest denomination. I don't know of any other monetary system with such an enormous range of value in circulating coinage, or sheer number of different denominations for that matter. (granted, the fractional farthings circulated almost exclusively in the poorer colonies, and the 2 and 5 sovereign pieces likely saw very limited circulation under any circumstance)

Thank you very much for sharing, this has given me much inspiration as well.

Something about having so many different and closely spaced denominations of coins is just very funny to me. It just seems so silly to have so many different coins but it certainly makes collecting more fun!
