Gob smacked! Stunned mullet! Descriptors of my current state after my first shot with my new camera. It was set to auto...just as a test. The lens was what was on the bellows: oly 135 mm @F8 EFCS was turned on, but I forgot to turn of the in body image stabilization system.

Lighting was just a cheap microscope ring light. I haven't even tried out the new native Macro lens yet!! I am yet to try out the fully silent shutter option( no front shutter and no rear shutter!) I had read this new issue from Sony was a 5DS(r) killer and I can see where that idea might have come from.

Given this was a thrown together as quickly as possible shot I think this camera is a keeper!

I am half tempted to sell my old camera and use the proceeds for an MPE 65 and the requisite metabones adapter

the lighting on the last picture wasn't great .. so When I got out the native lens( Sony FE90 mm F 2.8 G macro) I took a great deal more time on the lighting same coin And with IBIS turned off:

I'm sure it's just me, but I actually liked the first picture with the greater contrast showing better. Have fun with a new toy!

Same here, so it's not just you .

Both shots are fantastic, though.

Very sharp. Can we see a 100% crop? And what sort of in-camera processing is being done?

Here is the 100 % crop, However both images are posted via photobucket so you can down load them and pixel peep.

As for the in Camera processing....For now I don't know...I recall it is much improved over the earlier model with considerably less( my memory says zero but could be wrong) compression. I will be interested to see what Nikon does with the sensor, assuming they will be repeating what they did with the D810 and use the same sensor in a new offering. Apparently the fully electronic shutter mode sees the camera drop to 12 bit processing.

Edit Sony uses a BIONZ X processor and they claim it reduces diffraction. It is supposed to offer 14 bit raw processing... but from past experience we need to wait a couple of months to find out how much is marketing and how much is accurate.

I was advised, and I still haven't got my head round how it works, that the fully electronic setting sees the camera turning its self on and then off to take the picture

The big thing with the new sensor is not the number of MP but its design is back illuminated...unlike all other FF camera sensors, on the market at the moment, the on sensor wiring is behind the light gathering pixels, so the sensor has almost 1 stop more of light gathering

edit 2 : I tried the camera out with my Minolta Autofocus 500mm reflex lens. On other cameras that lens is a pain to Auto focus. On the new camera...it works ( very little focus hunting) simply and with no annoyance. Apparently Canon lenses operate as designed on this camera( with adapter) and there is a 3rd party adapter coming to market for Nikon lenses so it will be interesting to see how Nikon glass performs on this camera (if it actually happens)

Looks as sharp as the D810 at 100%. Seems the new sensors, or combo of sensors and demosaic processing, are a step ahead of previous generations. Maybe when I get some extra BW I'll rent both the 810 and the A7r and make a comparison with the older technology...Ray

I for one would be very interested in the comparison with the D810. I would be very surprised if this new version doesn't out perform the D810.

Currently the top three places for dynamic range are two nikons ( 1st and second) and then sony. Canon appears to be falling behind in this area. I am sure Nikon will adopt this new sensor( at the moment they seem to rely on Sony sensors) and may well produce a Camera that outperforms this new Sony offering. As is usual with technological development Nikon is going to have to work much harder to get that better performance.

This new camera has me going back several learning steps..... Although it is almost like my old camera the button positions have changed and some of the menu functions have changed. With this sharper camera my manual focusing is becoming more of a limitation.
