Royal Canadian Mint - Always keen to celebrate Canada through exciting innovations, the Royal Canadian Mint has launched the world's first maple leaf-shaped coin. The 2015 $20 Fine Silver Coin - The Canadian Maple Leaf is an intricately engraved coin that required creativity and ingenuity to achieve the realistic shape of a maple leaf on a keepsake which captures the natural beauty of Canada's national emblem in striking detail.

World’s-First-Maple-Leaf-Shaped-Coin-Headlines-Royal-Canadian-Mint’s-New-Release-Of-Collector-Coins

Some of most influential figures of the 20th century will find a home on Royal Canadian Mint coins thanks to a new fine silver series celebrating the iconic portraits of legendary Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. As 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Special Theory of Relativity, the first of these 10 oz. fine silver coins features Karsh's famed portrait of Albert Einstein. Delicate detailing and contrasting finishes bring out the subtleties of light and form which have made Karsh portraits so famous and iconic.

In anticipation of the popular cultural celebration of the Year of Monkey, symbolizing intelligence, charisma and agility, the Mint has issued a number of exciting collectibles. Among these are the first fine silver and pure gold one kilo coins to feature both enamel colouring and a scalloped edge. These 2016-dated coins were designed by Three Degrees Creative Group, as is the 2016 $15 Silver Coin - Lunar Lotus Year of the Monkey. Artist Aries Cheung also celebrates this theme through his designs of the 2016 $15 Fine Silver Coin and $150 Gold Coin - Year of the Monkey.

Indeed, I received the RCM catalog today and this particular "item" was on the cover page.

For sure, this is a first.

The RCM says it is "Limited to 15,000 COINS worldwide"

The RCM calls this a "Coin"? Maybe I'm just old fashion but that does NOT look like a coin to me. I can accept triangles, squares, with holes, paint or diamonds - but this?

I anticipate that some collectors will buy this item out of curiosity. It may sell well, it may not.

I'm considering the Einstein coin instead. You know, it's all relative.

Which means nothing. The 2015 Gold Superman coin was awaiting stock for 2 months and is now back.

Lots of stock at other dealers.

Gatewest Coins have a limit of 10.

I find it's hard to believe that it sold out with mintage of 15000 plus it's not cheap for one oz at $149.85

They are only sold out of the coins they had for sale on their site , which was maybe 2000 or less? The other coins went to dealers which is why you can buy them at almost any major coin dealer.

If they sell out at the dealers then I will be shocked , with 13000 remaining .

But anything is possible I guess.

World's first jersey-shaped coin
2015 All Blacks Silver Proof Coin

NZ Post .... I liked them for "Maori Art series"

IMHO, I don't consider them "coins". Who know's what's next. First, triangles, then rectangles, eventually, there will be square coin, and who knows what's next. May be there will be a Bugs Bunny shaped coin, a Superman shaped coin, and more...

Apparently sold out...

I'm happy for the RCM.

The next one needs to have Crystals or paint on it.

I saw the coin at local cp. I starting to like it. BUT the big case, the mintage (15000) and the price ($149.95) really stopping me from buying it

Modern numismatics appears to be headed down the same road that baseball cards did in the late 90s. Too many products out there.

While I think this "coin" has merit of its own and would consider buying it as a(n expensive) novelty, there's no way I could keep up with all the offerings of the RCM. Heck, I can barely keep up with the USM offerings!

I have yet to see the actual coin, but based on CCF's picture, I don't think I will like it. Someone mentioned it looks like a Christmas ornament. Let's hope the Mint is not looking into that idea.

Christmas ornament, I think I remember they already did that, but they weren't coins.

But if you did want a Christmas ornament coin, it's already 82% sold.

Its NOT sold out. It is "awaiting stock" which is totally different. Coins that have this status often come back.
Like the 2015 Gold Superman coin and the 10 coin flag circulation pack.

Besides, you can still buy up to 10 of them at Gatewest Coins.

I was going to pass on this Maple shaped coin because of its 15K mintage and high price, but am beginning to like it.

I'm surprised to see that it has sold out so quickly at our Canadian dealers (except for Gatewest). Prices on ebay are considerably higher now, too. I didn't expect it to be so popular with its high mintage.

"Awaiting stock" at the mint, but since most Canadian dealers are sold out I'm tempted to buy one now while it's still available. Or should I wait for the Bugs Bunny shaped coin? lol
