Wood Grain Penny Question

hey all! I'm gonna sound like a rookie here, what causes the wood grain look on some pennys?

It's a good question. Woodies are typically caused by improperly mixed alloy which causes the coin to tone unevenly, often in parallel-line streaks (resembling wood grain).
