Okay, first off one of the reasons the Homestead National Monument is brought up so much is because the monument is in the best state in the United States (but that was a given).

In all seriousness it keeps being brought up because their are SO MANY DDR's listed (and unlisted) for the coin. Right now, I belive it has over 50 DDR's (check Coops link).

When I get the time, I'll be getting a box of solid '15s, to familiarize myself w/ the numerous DDRs.
Seeing that their selling from $5 to $2500, I think that's enough motivation to get outta my comfort zone.
While some are practically too minor to list, they also include some real screamers. I saw a DDO this morning w/a very noticeable doubled profile that I got to have.

I am going to admit, I just tried checking 4 quarters for any of those 60 dies in the website linked above, and nearly went blind even trying to see the windows. What magnification are you people even using?

I might just give up cause it isn't worth going blind over for me, but thought I might give variety searching a try.

I use a microsope with the 3.5-35X range. Best to be able to see something with 10X. If not most buyers will pass on anything that you can't see with that power.

I just check and I han't changed anything since that image was taken many years ago. I did have a problem with my back/neck getting sore when using this, but I added more books under the scope and the light to raise it up a bit. Now it's better. (raised it about 3 inches)

Not sure why, but I jsut checked about 30 and it was easier than the first 4. I accidently held the quarter so I was looking at it upside down under my microscope and it was a lot easier to see that way and found what appear to be about a dozen off that list. Will have to check more closely later cause a dozen cifferent DDRs from 1 box of quarters can't be right or is a massive fluke.Unless they just made that many errors.

I use 10x. If I can't see it with that it's not worth collecting. If I can, I'll probably go up to 14x to get a better look and in extreme cases maybe up to 20x if there is something more I want to see.

I never use a scope to examine a coin (well maybe once or twice a year). I can see everything I need with a glass.

I own two stereoscopes but only keep one out with a 10x eyepiece on one side and a 20x on the other so I can quickly change over to the higher power if necessary.

For photography, I use the 10x 95% of the time zooming up to around 40x. I use incandescent lighting from a standard goose neck light.

With enough experience, you will find that using diffusers such as plastic from a milk jug or just a standard piece of white paper, work against you robbing the image of detail. It is best to largely avoid them and take the time to learn how to position your light properly. Once you learn how to shoot without a diffuser, you'll rarely have to use them again.

Ken, on your incandescent lighting, do you use Is it soft white (2700K), cool white (4100K), or daylight (5000K)? 60W, 75W, or 100W?

Thanks in advance. :)
