I saw this story was in a CoinWorld update and it caught my eye as I have a hard time figuring out how it came to be.

Here's the link to the article http://www.coinworld.com/insights/2...r--ms-6.html

Thoughts, reactions?

I have a difficult time believing this was not intentionally done.

I'd say that given the relatively low sell price people were skeptical. I would think that something that unique, if a true error, would bring more than $35K. A penny getting struck on a dime, ok, I can believe that. Getting a dollar coin to fit into a space for a penny defies everything that's always been preached about a larger coin not fitting in a smaller die.

If this is real, what are the chances it would EVER happen again. I just think the price would be higher given the MS66 and the rarity of it. Just my thought.

The struck through Cent has occured before, but the cent was struck on just one side. (legit mint error)

Possible cent planchet in with the dollar planchets. The OP's item had to be moved from one machine to a different one. (mint assisted as the collar was not in place)

Probably the same guy created the dollar-quarter error as well?

It could be a brilliant move on the Mint's part. By creating these one-of-a-kind "errors" they could sell them at auction to fund their operations.

If they created them, then they would just be normal coins. These are the ones that get out from the mint that shouldn't have.

Somehow, despite the great disparity of diameter, the coin ended up between Lincoln Cent dies, and was struck a second time.

My favourite line in the write up.

That one is about as helped as this one! I'd rather spend $1.75 to have my own struck than $32,000 to get one somebody made and sneaked out the back door of the Mint.

Or how about this one from GMM?
