I would like to know re: what is the relevance of small date & large date cents, because there seems to be lot of die varieties in a Lincoln Cent. What is then is the collectible type. Please advise.
The relevance of small and large date cents? That the master hub was changed mid-year and the details came out slightly different, namely the date.
Die varieties have nothing to do with small or large date coins per-se. Of course whether a coin is large or small date has bearing as to whether you have one die variety or another, but still the die variety has to be there regardless of whether the coin is large or small date.
All coins, large or small date, are collectible. I'm guessig you mean which is more valuable? Generally the small date, and I believe that's merely by chance - that there were fewer small dates minted than the large dates for all but the 1974 cents - it is unknown which is more common in those because they are as of yet understudied.
You should be made aware that only the following large and small date years exist:
1960, 1970 (S mint only), 1974, and 1982.
Another fun collectible is mintmark types - there are many different ones, and some are difficult to find.
