Hi all, I found a very odd penny the other day and was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me more about it. What makes it odd is this: It's noticeably larger than a regular penny It's a silverish color It's lighter than a regular penny the edges around it seem double ridged (top and bottom) Attaching pictures. Thanks in advance! *** Edited by Staff to remove YELLING. All capital letters is the internet version of yelling. Please don't do it in titles or posts. ***

I am guessing it has had the plating removed and is an example of a " Texas Cent". A " Texas Cent" is made by placing a penny between two layers of leather and smashing it until it gets bigger in diameter. It is considered damage and has no added collector value.

It is not possible to be struck by cent dies, since the design on it is bigger than on a normal cent.

It weighs about 1 gram. Texas cents end up weighing less than a regular penny when they go through that process?

But it is also bent around the edges so the striking would make sense

I guess it is just a texas penny. Wanted to share a tip with all of you and not sure if it's already known by the forum.
If you go to a TD bank they have a coin counting machine. If any penny prior to 1982 is inserted it gets dropped in the return bin due to the weight difference. Most people don't even bother to pick them up because hey it's a penny. But I've found some very cool older pennies in these machines by just reaching down and grabbing whatever is in there. That's where I found this one. Hope the tip helps someone!

Also could be a coin stretched using a coin stretcher. Or someone counterfeiting just didn't know how big a Cent was. For sure wouldn't fit in an Album or Folder for Cents.
