Hello,

I recently purchased this coin and am doubting its authenticity but would like some other opinions. I have been following the 1820s Counterfeit Zacatecas 8 reales thread and hope someone with much more experience than I can shed some light on this coin.

Weight: 26.88 gr
Diameter: 39.89 mm

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Weight checks out correctly, but when doing some extensive comparing (with the picture below), I can find a couple of decrepencies.

First off, the coin seems just too reflective for both its age and history. It also lacks any trace of toning, which is to be expected.

The 'R' in 'GRATIA' is broken, which it's not supposed to be.

On the reverse, I find the font to be just about bolder and softer, although it might be because of colour contrasts on your picture.

These are my findings. It'd say it's fake because of its shininess, but regardless it's a good fake considering most things check out, including weight.

Its a modern fake.

Go to Amazon Books and buy the Gurney book so this does not happen again.
