This 1863 IHC is slabbed (PCGS MS62) so I can't get a close-up with my USB microscope.

The reverse has a glob beside the leaves at 1 to 2 o'clock, I'm not sure if this is a die crack or something else.

I see what appears, to me, to be a die crack running through the leaves from 9 to 10 o'clock. It's tiny.

And, there are 'dents' in the rim above the shield. I have no idea what those are.

Any information would be appreciated. Did the die have cracks? Are those little dents PSD?

The color of the coin is off -- it is actually more yellow. Also, the 'cloud' on the obverse is just scratches on the slab.

Thanks for looking.

Looks like a die brake that has progressed into a Retained Cud. The marks on the rim are uneven metal flow probably caused by the alignment problems that occurred due to the broken die in the Cud area. nlp

That appears to be an earlier die state of 1863 variety 32 in my book, indiancentvarieties.com Here is the link:

If you want to send it to me to attribute the die state and photograph it for inclusion in the book, let me know. I won't charge an attribution fee and the attribution will be in your name, just include funds for insured return shipping.

There's a deal, he wants to use it for his book, but you have to pay shipping both ways and risk it being lost.

Keep in mind that I'm still a rookie at this identifying varieties

Could this be a late die state of Snow-10?

Strong offset doubling to the north visible above many of the right wreath leaves. Some doubling is also visible on the left leaves, but not as much as on the right. Later die states show a die crack from the rim at 1:00 to the rim at 2:00. (page 211 Snow 3rd edition)

Here's an earlier die state, but yours should have the same doubling by the ribbon.

I can readily glean from your post that you are naive in this process. So, let ME educate YOU. It is customary to ask for return shipping. I, as well as others, do it when authors request coins. I have done it when Snow has asked and Fortin.

For your information, the book is a service for everyone to enjoy and learn, so I thought to ask someone if they wouldn't mind adding to the knowledge base. I seriously don't think you would go out in the street and ridicule someone, so why would you do it through this forum?

You can't possibly educate me. It's rude, plain and simple.

Since I'll be at the show, I will definitely take it with me and I hope I get the chance to show it to Rick Snow. (I hate to lurk around the tables when the dealers are busy.)

I'll let you all know what happens.

(I'm so excited -- THE Big Show and my first Cud.)
