When I was just brand new in the hobby I bought a bunch of steel wheat cents that look pretty much just like this one. I'm in the process now of thinning out my collection and would like to sell these online, but also accurately describe them in doing so.
Is this what is called a re-platted or reprocessed cent - and is there a difference? Also, I'm wondering what exactly the reprocessing process is? I'd like to include that information in the description for those now new to the hobby.
I apologize in advance for what I understand are small pictures. I'm trying to fix that -- but for some reason they're appearing large enough on my cell phone.
The reprocessing is done by stripping off the zinc and rust in an acid bath. The coins are then replated with Zinc.
A long, long time ago there were advertisers in Coin World that would take your rusty steel cents and reprocess them for you. It was done on a 1 for 2 basis (or some ratio like that). You send them 100 coins and they would send you back 50 reprocessed coins. The ones they kept were their "fee" for doing the work.
Reprocessed Steelies almost have a bluish hue to them. Natural coins have a more silver matte finish.
