This must be from the same person that had the 1799 cent that was also "Authenticity Unverified".

Looks like 1803 S-248, small date small fraction.

That's a strange one not to be able to verify, even if it isn't exactly pretty.

what I find odd is that the owner thinks someone would bid at $250 starting bid on an item with such problems. I just do not understand the thought process... One of the world's leading specialist on coin verification says Authenticity Unverifiable Then they did not say it wasn't authentic So it most likely is a rare and valuable thing that the expert has never seen! Put it on ebay! Well at least the seller openly admits that there is problems with authenticity.

I don't see any problem with the auction. That's Michael Casper, who has been involved in coins as long as I've been alive and I'm 56. He's a Morgan guy and as good with meteorites as he is coins. I've no doubt he knows PCGS also blew the attribution, and that's why he phrased it the way he did.

okay dave, no prob. But why start it so high?
I just do not see the logic. Why would someone want to spend that much on a coin that has a very high likelyhood of being non-authentic?
I made no dig on the seller, heck, he is being upfront

S-248?
I would not buy any coin I couldn't without a doubt, verify.

the coin isn't fake. What PCGS is saying is that they cant autheticate if its a large date small fraction. It clearly is NOT a large date though and is sad that they couldnt verify that. The seller should know better and this auction is misleading. I dont care who they are. There is no way this coin is worth anywhere close to $250, maybe $50

It is an R-4 coin, but if someone needed one, a better example could be had for less.

Some of the best dealers in numismatics publish ridiculous asking prices. Julian Leidman comes to mind.

Quote: okay dave, no prob. But why start it so high? Well because if he does think it is a large date small fraction, $250 in that condition would be a very LOW starting price. Believe me I would be DELIGHTED to be able to by an S-264 in that condition for $250.
